They wanted to charge me like $800 to install a new one. After I double checked the install I left the airbag out and column trim off (to argue labor costs ) so I can clearly see that A) the wheel is still a notch off center where and B) the markings on the wheel and column are misaligned exactly as I left them. So they never took the wheel off as part of their diagnostic...

All the parts were finally in for them to do the 911 and then swap it for the P!g for it's recall. Dropped the 911 off Wed and got a nice new Macan loaner. Dealer calls last night to tell me that it should get a new clock spring too for $105, ok. They call back this morning and say the part will actually be $300, no. Car will be ready at 11.
Get there, still not put back together and they try again to get me to buy a clock spring. Spend lots of time looking at a brand new GT3RS on the floor and two older 991 GT3s that show up for service. Finally after an hour I get the car. Drive off. Make first turn and .... wait for it ... signal doesn't reset. Because they wasted so much of my time I couldn't turn around. Made 14 turns on the way home where I used the signals and they should have reset, nada
Oh well. This is why I let them do the install this time. I figured there was something else that had to be going on...
In other news, my description of some drivability issues in the P!g apparently means it needs a new xfer case. Bonus diesel warranty runs out next month (but will be getting another year of power train at the completion of the recall), so score another one for owning a diesel through the scandal

Given my own experience I can totally see that he tested it in the bay and was satisfied and then it went poof again. Remember:
1) Factory signal lasted 12 years, replacement was ~4.
2) Both directions were broken rather than the typical single direction.
3) The replacement showed the same problems in ~15 miles and 9 days.
4) The replacement would intermittently work rather that the typical "once it's dead, it's dead".
Each of those items on their own could be coincidence/luck/weird, but all 4 have seemed fishy to me. Now that idiot DIY owner has been taken out of the mix I think it's pretty clear that something else is going on.
Update: SA is on the phone with me now trying to convince me that the clock spring they really want to charge me for is at fault
Edit: So the explanation they are pushing is that there are posts on the back of the clock spring that are responsible for tripping the pin on the stalk module to reset the signal. That doesn't jive with either what I was seeing or what I know of clock springs, but a quick search to see how much a new spring not from the Dealer would cost me turned up:

So I guess I pull it back apart this weekend to see if this is indeed the issue and if that repair will save me the cost of a new spring.
