Once when mine went bad on my '99, it locked my frunk and only the frunk. Everything else was fine. Ignition switches cause lots of weird ass gremlins.
How could that be? I thought the 99's had a straight mechanical cable release???!!!
They do, but there is a locking solenoid down there in the door sill under the levers.

If a mechanism is lacking of lubrication and most of the moving parts are metal against metal... wouldn't heat cause them to expand and "lock up" (no pun intended)?
Maybe. I would still go for something worn or loose before going after lubrication. I'm talking about your diagram #14 which is in the category of "lock mechanism".

As I recall this is not uncommon. Once you get it open you need to give the latch mechanism a good cleaning and then re-lubricate it. Might as well get the passenger side while you're at it.

The grease just gets dirty and degrades over time.

So dirty degraded grease could be temperature sensitive or do you think the timing of the occurrence just an anomaly?

I would expect that heat has more to do with the degredation, but it also could be that it warmed up the grease and allowed dirt to work into a bad place. I doubt it's a metal expansion issue though.

Thx man. Curious, does the handle open the door with a simple cable/latch mechanism or is it triggered electrically? In other words, if the car is completely dead with no battery, can you still open the door if it was unlocked?

My two cents is the door handle opening parts looks mechanical. So I would guess if the battery was even removed you could still open the doors.

Yes the driver door is 100% mechanical and works without power.

I find it hugely ironic that you bring this up, because my car has started to do this on hot days. If the sun hits the drivers side of the door, pull the door handle and the window drops but the door does not open. Only happens when it is a hot day. Sometimes I unlock, pull, then have to relock, then unlock again and it works. I have taken to not locking the door if I feel the car is in a safe place. Usually then I can walk up to it, pull the handle and it opens right up. This is so stupid, but I have been selecting parking spaces based on whether the sun will hit the drivers side door.

My door latch is well lubricated. I do believe in the end I will have to replace the entire door latch mechanism (#14).

Thx Joe! I’m glad I’m not alone with this problem. Looks like I’m going to be replacing the lock mechanism in the near future. Ugh.
