Supercharged

So I know the conventional wisdom for a NA 996 owner that wants more Powwweerrrrr is to save the rupees and one day upgrade to a Turbo. Which still seems like a good idea, but with 996 prices still so darn low (I’ve seen pretty clean, under 100k, not beat to hell models going for less than 15) wouldn’t it be an okay idea to buy said cheapo 996 and say buy a used supercharger kit, I’ve seen those go for around 5 or so, and slap that bad boy on there and just wait for all the lady folk to come running when they see the size your testes have grown with all that powwweeeerrrr? Of course I know the madness, adding forced induction to an engine forged of blown glass in the fires of Mount Doom? You crazy son! But I feel like I’ve read many examples on the interwebs of people adding superchargers and not experiencing sudden catastrophe. Does anyone have an experience with this, or know someone that does? Did the engine go all Krazy or did it keep humming along with all those extra ponies?

For the record I am so not in the market to do this right now, just really curious, mostly because my brother (a Cayman S bro) keeps saying this is what I should do in a few years. Of course in a few years, if I keep adding miles at the voracious rate I have been, my car will be, like really, really high mileage.

You know, I gave some real thought to this, so before you trash my dumb answer just think for a second that this is the best I can do and take pity:

I'd rather just pull the engine and use the money to rebuild it with components that will handle the stress of the supercharger, better. I feel like at least at that point I could enjoy the car without feeling like every hard pull is inching me closer to rebuild, anyway. The cost would probably be a bit more... but 1 excellent car is better than 2 so-so cars in my mind.

I feel like it's a bit of a trope, but ... LS conversion.

Go for a good condition roller <$10k and then build up an LS to put in.

Wouldn't be very "Porsche", but adding a super charger wouldn't really be either ;)

Just put a 50 HP shot of N20 on the car. Same result, much cheaper and safer. A C2 with a 50 shot will run right next with the turbo.

A Viggen is still gonna kick it's ass though.

This.

But then again the $15k for the 996 along with the $20k this costs gets you into a turbo. So I vote for exhaust driven boost and a better engine...

Well, that kinda goes without saying, though.

Well if you get a standing start you might have a chance. No fucking way on a roll though!

You know I keep forgetting about this. I don’t know why we even bother having any cars aside from Viggens...
