My car is now suffering from intermittent starter delay (2-3 sec. delay between key twist and starter engagement)...looks like I can't procrastinate installing the new starter any longer.

I'm going to swap in a new ignition switch at the same time (it's been sitting on the shelf next to the starter for about a year)...I think I'll pull out the driver seat this time.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

You can also get the part from ac VW dealer. From what I have been told, its around $30 and it is the same part a Porsche dealer sells for around $150. Apparently it has 3 part numbers on it, VW, Audi and Porsche

At least that is what I have been told

As you likely know, these switches are in an awkward place. Once I finally wrestled mine out, I replaced the set screws with a couple of cap screws (with tips pointed on grinder), so I can now loosen them with my fingers. Should make next swap much easier.

Well, if you can wait a couple of weeks, we can knock it out in 19 to 38 minutes.

I called the local Audi dealership, but they didn’t stock it. I never thought about trying the VW dealer (which is pretty ironic for me).

Go there for P!g parts too.

Porsche TDI oil crush washer: $5.75
Audi version of the same part from the same dealer: $3.50
VW dealer: $0.25

If there is a VW version of a part, always buy it instead!

$5.50 markup just for the name. That should be illegal! Who would pay that delta unless tragically uninformed. Shame on Porsche for the gouging.

Good news - since the new starter resolved my crank delay issue, the new ignition switch is going back into the fuggit bucket for future use.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Update: Neither Autozone nor NAPA carry the ignition switch in stock any longer. I tried the local VW dealer and Audi dealer. The nearest one in stock was Toronto. That means if you need one, you will need to order it. I will renew my recommendation from earlier in this thread that you should carry an extra one in the car, and throw a small screwdriver tip in the box with the part. It's small and cheap enough that it just makes sense to carry an extra - think of it like the spare fuses we all pretty much keep in the glovebox.

That being said, Amazon stocks 3 different versions - the OE part (now $45), the cheaper URO part ($15) and an even cheaper, unbranded part for $7.49. The cheapest part is available for same-day delivery, so I ordered one of those, and then I ordered the OE part because I know the cheapo one won't last long. The OE part will arrive the middle of next week. If I didn't need to drive the car to an event tomorrow, I would have just waited for the OE one to arrive. Of course, had I heeded my own advice and kept an extra on hand, I wouldn't have a problem at all, now, would I?
