Heh. I think you should pick up another busted one, gut them both, and use them as chopsticks in trendy Asian restaurants Apple people are likely to frequent.

The new hand writing to text feature they just added actually works really well, but typing is easier. So I can't really recommend the pencil unless there is something really specific you need it for.

I have a 3D printer and white filament. If I can't find an existing model, I'm sure I could whip up a good enough approximation to fool fanbois at 5-10 feet.

You should print up some fakes and epoxy them to the sidewalk outside Starbucks. You could probably trap or tranquilize 150 fanbois/grrls per day per location with this bait...

Ok so the old laptop is still chugging along with the same old battery, but the wife is pushing me to get a replacement. So I've got a few questions:
M1 chip good or bad?
The new MacBook Pro says 12.9". The 2020 "refurb." version says 13.3". My current mid-2014 one is a 13" but measures about 13.5" I am assuming the 12.9 would be a noticeable difference?
I know whatever I buy will kick the current boat anchor's azz so...
Opinions?

If you go M1, all of your existing USB/Mini DisplayPort cables, your MagSafe charger(s), etc. become obsolete. I'm also not a fan of the USB-C charging solution - the charger gets HOT.

Probably because of the anemic USB-C power delivery limits, trying to charge the thing and use it simultaneously is a joke.

It also bleeds power far worse than my old Macbook Pro and Macbook Air - I could leave those things hibernating in my computer bag for weeks on end and they'd wake up with almost no loss of charge. The M1 seems to bleed off charge MUCH more quickly - but I haven't bothered trying to quantify it.

Ok so I broke down and bought a Nov. 2020 release 13" M1 equipped laptop from Apple Refurb. So far so good after getting past the "new and improved features". There is nothing intuitive on this machine. Thank a Higher Power for Ask Mr. Goggle. First thing was to download the new Apple OS panic release this week which was a pain in the azz. One thing I did appreciate was the transfer feature from my old laptop to the new one. That saved me a crap load of time.

Now I'm shopping for a dock that includes USB and a card reader at the minimum.

Any suggestions on a reliable brand for such a device.

At least they left the headphone jack in this version!

I'll post a pic of the port replicator I bought...I haven't found a reason to dislike it (other than it occupies both ports on the Macbook) - it has the stuff I wanted (Ethernet and HDMI). I have not tried to run both HDMI ports simultaneously.

Ok so I bought a Hyper Drive 7-in-2 Duo dongle and have a question. So after plugging in it warmed up! I do not have anything plugged into the dongle. Just have the dongle plugged into the MacBook. What the "F" am I powering up inside this thing and why??? Hyper Drive did not include a schematic...

I haven't noticed it myself, but some of the Amazon reviews mention that it gets warm.

There is a decent amount of electronics in that gadget, and the aluminum case is probably also the heat sink...
