The turbo diesel was the one that I found to be lacking. If you Google something like E70 X5 diesel issues, you'll get a better idea of what issues folks ran into. For non-BMW folks, E70 is the designation for the X5 platform used from 2006 to 2013, preceded by the E53 and followed by the F15.

I can't speak to the reliability of the non-diesel turbo X5's (assuming there are non-diesel turbos; I lost interest after CarMax accidentally offered me nearly the entire purchase price for a 2.5-year-old vehicle).

We were looking at 2015-2017. No diesel for me. Sounds like all the engines have at least one turbro in these years!?

So, just posted my son's first car up for sale (he's taking our blue 955S to college next week). Waiting for the parade of Craigslist dumbasses to begin.

Holy Crap! Will you adopt me? Below is a representative pic of my first car when I was in H.S.(mine was not even near that good of condition).Of course this was in 1966 but still a jitney compared to an X5.

Late to the game, but ... Cayenne (958).

Like the 996, we've had her 07 328xi since new. Ultimate driving machine my ass, but to this day it's been reliable and has cost us little. The xDrive controller failed days before the warranty ended and that's the only major issue in 10 years).

Even though I'm not a fan of modern BMWs, I looked hard at the X5 diesel in 2012 based on our experience with the 328. I was set on it until the wife says "what about a Cayenne?". Like the BMW, the 996 has been good to us it's whole life).

I found I could (at the time) get a base v6 with a manual with a couple options for the same price as the X5d. As long as I didn't drive a bigger motor I knew I could be happy with a base. I spent a few weeks going back and forth which to get, and then the diesel came out. That was it for me.

I'll have had it 6 years in Nov and I still find myself uttering "god I love this thing" almost every time I drive it. Ultimately it came out 15k over the X5, but it looks better and drives better and has been worth every penny.

So far it's proven to be nice and reliable six years in with the only major "issue" being the diesel scandal.

As Schnelly mentioned months ago, if you get a BMW, replace the runflats with normal tires ASAP. Those things suck and normal tires drastically improve ride quality.

That's a very clean looking X5 KC. What's the mileage on the chassis, over 190k based on your sneaky lawyer explanation? 😉

Yep, 195k on the chassis. "Priced Accordingly".

So, I'm sitting here at the law firm/auto museum. I've got 5 people coming by to look at it between now and 1:00 pm. First one that offers me $2,000 is getting his ass kicked right out the door. "Well, it's got a scratch on the door" will also get the boot.
