My 2017 Cherokee WANTS me to get rid of it...

Post by 5chn3ll » Tue Sep 10, 2019 1:31 pm

Mrs. S's 2017 Cherokee is once again proving that buying domestic might not be the least frustrating vehicular option.

'17 model year Cherokee with 55K miles on it. The new trick it has learned:

Once you exceed 5MPH - or sometimes at highway speed when you are not expecting it - the transmission shifts into Neutral, and the dash displays "Shift into Park." The Jeep then cycles through airbag/SRS system, parking brake, and transmission warnings.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

Sounds like it's form of limp mode. Given that it shifts to neutral my guess is that some sensor/sub-computer is acting up and the ECU is having trouble figuring out if the vehicle is moving and how fast. As it's an AWD/4WD with an automatic transmission there are lots of places the problem could be and a few will not carry nice price tags...

I say hope for wheel speed sensors.

After looking at CANBUS debugging and realizing I have no interest in that rabbit hole, I think it's time to rethink modern Jeep ownership.

The Interwebs are awash with similar issues, but of course the dealership has never heard of such things.

THIS HAPPENED ON MY GRAND CHEROKEE RENTAL THIS WEEKEND! :o

The damn thing had 4500 miles on it. Fully loaded Summit edition. I was backing out of my in-law's driveway into the 2-lane road and I got stuck across both lanes of traffic. My only saving grace was this was in a small town and luckily nobody came before I figured it out. I kept shifting into drive and it kept going into neutral and telling me to put it in park. It did this about 4 times before I shut the engine off and started it back up again. I was freaking out in the middle of the road having a mini panic attack

That sucks man. With the amount of electronics in those 8-9 speed transmissions there is no way to figure out what's going on without dealer help.

And that's why the Jeep has a warranty. ;)

We'll see what the extra chromosome dump - sorry, my service writer - comes up with.

They're also sensitive. It took a week for the collision repair folks and another dealership to work out that the endless inaccurate burned-out tail light warnings were actually caused by the body shop using a non-Mopar-branded bulb in the license plate lamp holder. Mind you, it was the correct bulb designation - but not a Mopar part.
