We'll see what the extra chromosome dump - sorry, my service writer - comes up with.

Jeeps can be quirky. We have a 2007 Grand Cherokee diesel (forgotten offspring of the Daimler-Chrysler marriage). Bought it about ten years ago as a CPO. Being a Chrysler product I bought the longest factory extended warranty I could, so we were covered until it hit 100,000 miles. Actually the car has been reliable, but for some odd reasons it eats glow plugs. Right now two are out, but it still starts fine. Will change them all before it gets too cold. Tomorrow it gets driven to Detroit and back, about a 500 mile round trip.

Last Jeep we had was a 1996 Grand Cherokee Orvis Edition. Bought it used at @ 30k miles drove it to 100k then gave it a kid and she drove it for another two years. Only problem we had was it sheered off the power steering pump shaft while on expressway near LaGrange, Il. that was thrilling! So the old ones weren't bad. I'm a big Consumer Reports reader and they trash the shit out of the new Jeeps. So a long warrantee is attractive!

Well, maybe you're not driving your car correctly! We 'Mericans drive differently than those fastidious Germans, apparently. This transmission has been an issue for 5 years.

Blame the driver. It couldn't possibly be the overly complex transmission design now could it? Guess German engineering is beyond my understanding.

The thing is, in Europe most people still drive manuals. Luxury cars have automatics, normal cars are almost 100% manual. And European roads are far more challenging than American. So it would make logical sense that in US we would have manual cars, and Europeans would have automatics.

Diesel hatchback with 5 speed manual is very efficient.

The percentage of automatics compared to manuals in Europe went from 24.7% in 2012 to 37.7% in 2017. They're behind our curve, but automakers will eventually kill the manual in Europe as well.

OK, here's the working theory, backed up by a ridiculously small amount of traction from teh Google: some OBD-II code scanners do not place nicely with the diagnostic ports on some vehicles. Kia, for example, has advised its techs to look for and disconnect OBD-II dongles, including code scanners and insurance company "good driver" trackers, because they can introduce signal degradation issues.

Multiple CAN-BUS errors will put the vehicle in "limp home" mode - there are several white papers out there explaining that the current bus implementation makes the system especially vulerable to attackers. I think my cheap-ass code scanner worked nicely as an "attacker" in our scenario. Interesting reading: https://rtcl.eecs.umich.edu/wordpress/w ... CCS_16.pdf
