Basement!

Post by DTMiller » Fri Jan 17, 2020 7:44 am

We have long thought about finishing our basement and are starting to muse about it more seriously. The basement has some rough ins but for the life of me I can't figure out what is what. I've done some research and a lot of people just end up breaking up the slab and rerouting the plumbing but I'd rather see if there is a way to make what is here work. I can't really do any meaningful design/layout work unless I figure out if a bathroom can go where this stuff is and how exactly it would be positioned. Anyone know anything about this stuff? Also I have no idea why the pictures are sideways but whatever, you're smart folks.

The pipe Chase is sniffing is 2", the one to the right is 4" and then there is a 17*19" plywood rectangle beyond that.

There are two 4" stacks through the concrete, one of them in the far corner of the basement, about 25 feet from the pipes.

A vent line is capped behind the beam:

And another 4" stack.

The pictures are sideways because I suck as a forum runner guy.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Sure about that? This is DT we are talking about. He probably lost control going around turn 10 again.

As far as the pipes go.

The larger pipe is for the toilet and the smaller is for a sink drain. I don't see hot/cold lines in that area though. Under the insulation in the ceiling maybe?

That other 4" pipe is where everything exits to the street. I suggest that if you wall it in (vs being in an unfinished storage area) that you build in a removable panel so a plumber can get to that cap if they need to rather than busting through drywall.

Is there a bath or kitchen overhead? Could be designed for overhead/in-wall supply instead of bringing copper up through the slab.

*edit* looks like a toilet installed upstairs in about the same place...so you should be able to tap that. Heh.

That might be a little past "gray water", but excellent advice for reducing water usage cost...

Sorry, but couldn't resist given the relevance to DTM in so many ways:
