Oh Deer...

Post by Battery Guy » Sat May 09, 2020 5:39 pm

Not a great day Thursday - driving back from Cincinnati with my wife we managed to hit a deer on I-675. Never had a chance to hit the brakes or swerve as I was going 65, night time, and I did not see the deer until he was about 10 feet in front of me. Fortunately I hit his back legs and the rest of the deer was pointed the other way. The stupid deer was literally just standing the the middle of the freeway.
Now its at the body shop. Could have been worse. At least now I will get a new front bumper cover /air dam that was getting hacked up on the bottom.

Does not look too bad in this picture, but the fender is pushed into the door, and the xenon headlight assembly is shattered. Wild guess - $7,500. Will see what the estimate comes in on Monday. At least it is costing me $500 either way...

Ha ha. True. Bent metal can be fixed. Not losing any sleep over it, just hate throwing $500 away. But we were OK and it could have been a whole lot worse if the deer had come through the windshield.

Glad you're OK. Deer are stupid...or suicidal...

A few years back, I was out in a REALLY remote part of the high desert doing some high-speed blasts in the 996. At about 150MPH, I developed a contrail (more than slightly terrifying when you're redlining your M96 in 5th gear), which turned out to be coolant blasting out around the water pump impeller shaft. After determining that I didn't have any new holes in the block - and a quick change of underwear - I started back toward civilization to buy enough water jugs to get me the rest of the way home.

Within a mile of where I'd just been ripping along the deserted 2-lane highway, a doe and a fawn bolted across the road right in front of me. If I'd still been going 100+ instead of 50ish, I would have gotten venison-slapped. Badly.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

Thanks! We were pretty lucky. Had we hit the deer square-on, it likely would have come through the windshield which would have been problematic. Here in Ohio we are overrun with deer and it is a huge problem - my neighbor hit one in his Mercedes, got it fixed, and two weeks later hit another one on the same stretch of road in the same car. He was not pleased.

Did not hear from the body shop today - hopefully this will not turn into a Gnat deal that goes into months not weeks. I do have a rental car but it is a Ford Fusion.

I've just got one question. Who got the deer? You or the dog?

Yikes! That was wild. All I can say is I’m glad mine was not that bad. I’m guessing the driver that hit the deer also needed clean pants...

OK. The BMW is back and looks good. Also much cleaner then when it left. Was very pleased with the body shop that I used - they are MB certified and several other certifications (Audi, Tesla) but oddly not BMW. But the work they did was excellent, I cannot tell that there was paintwork even in very bright sunlight. Also my stone chips on the hood and the moderately hacked up front air dam are either replaced or refinished. Basically it looks like a new car.
Final bill was $8,250 !! Fortunately my deductible was $500 so that was my total cost.
