Upgraded my shitty HF welder with an incrementally less shitty HF welder
The wire feed rotted completely off my old Harbor Freight flux-core welder a couple of years back, and I’ve been stuck booger-welding with my ancient stick welder ever since. Mrs. S. has some artsy-type stuff she wants me to do for her, so it was a great excuse to buy the low-end inverter welder. First project will be to weld up a cart for both functional welders and the plasma cutter.

It's no stack o' dimes - but I think I could eventually not be 100% shitty with this thing...

Are the little "sputters" around your welds discharged from the welder or is that a technique thing you need to clean up?

As a once certified welder*, the top line actually doesn't look terrible. The bottom line is shit though and you should be ashamed of yourself.
* The wife refuses to take me with her to any art exhibit where welding is involved as I spend the whole time complaining about all their shit welds

I'm spoiled on weld appearance due to a previous shop I managed we bought a computer control welding robot from a firm in Germany. It had two articulated welding positions for reconditioning the axel bores for the motors under diesel locomotives. It was awesome! The employees named it "Krazy Karl". It would locate the bore, measure off to determine how much weld it needed to add and put it on faster than you can blink. It would bounce back and forth between the two different motors to prevent imparting too much heat in the bore. The travel speed was shocking. The weld was perfect...no pockets or defects and only enough put on for machining back to proper size. It just happens, but the amount suggests that he could turn the electricity down a bit. Except for the one spot in the middle and end (left) on the top weld he kept a nice steady pace even if it was made a bit fast. The bottom weld, on the other hand not only moved too fast, but he didn't keep pace which which is why the puddles are more pronounced, oval, and has flat/thin areas.
I'd say Herr Schnell has the makings of a decent welder. Just needs to work on adjusting the power and being more steady with his travel.
