It's a Good Week in the 914 Forum

Post by FRUNKenstein » Sat Feb 03, 2018 9:26 am

The focus of this website is the 996 series of Porsche. But, soon after this 996 website was created, we realized that there was a desire for discussion of other Porsche models here. Many of us own other models of Porsche, so we created a subforum for each of the other models.

The purpose of this thread is to give you 914 guys a place to develop some camaraderie. It's OK to post non-technical stuff here. And because it's annoying to have a technical thread get littered with jokes and such, let's try to keep that non-technical stuff here and out of the other threads in this subforum.

I'd really like to get a 914. I almost bought a blue one, a little lighter color than yours, back in 1982 when I was a high school senior. I ended up buying an X1/9. But, that 914 was my first real Porsche moment. My dad had died a few years earlier, so my uncle was my car adviser. He worked at the local Ford factory, and he was really pushing me toward a Mustang. How we settled on an X1/9, I'll never know (I think it was cheaper at $2,900 and the 914 was maybe $3,600). I'll never forget walking around back of the seller's house to the one-car detached garage. The garage had carriage doors, and I remember the 914 sitting there in all of its exotic Porsche glory - basically a "shut up and take my money" moment.

My uncle bought 914 new in 1972. I don’t know the story, but he wrecked it shortly after while in Mexico. I’ll have to ask about the story the next time I see him. It was towed to Arizona and supposedly rebuilt which I find hard to believe after seeing the pics. He bought a 911 soon after the wreck.

It would be great to track it down if it’s still out there. The VIN is 4722917209.

Pics for your enjoyment.

*Edit*. I can’t get multiple pics from my iPad. Probably user error.

Looks like a rollover accident. Pretty nasty one. Hard to believe they were able to save that car.

The 914 wasn't collectible throughout the 70's-90's. Even it it had been sitting in a salvage lot after the wreck, it's hard to imagine it wasn't sold for scrap long ago. That would be one hell of a rebuild.

Either a rollover or a pass-side impact with an immovable object. Either way...ow. Glad OP's uncle lived.

-Hopeful salvage guy (probably)

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

The rear bumper looks mint, though!
