Is that a real thing with the 914?

My first e30 experience was like that. Turned out the bottoms of the a pillars had completely rusted through and separated from the frame and the body paneling was the only thing giving it structure there...

Definitely "caveat emptor" when it comes to 914 shopping.

Wait a minute...

914 Porsche Germany
E30 BMW Germany

(refer to Warehouse33 thread)

I'm beginning to think German engineers aren't all that great on many things.

I don't know about the 914, but the e30 is an idiotic design where the sun roof drains are tubes that just end at the bottom of the A pillars and dumps the water in there with the expectation that it will empty through the body drains. Ignoring the fact that the body drains get blocked up so the water then builds up over flows into the cabin as well as sitting there and rusting the metal away so that eventually your sunroof drains straight into the cabin.

The engineer that picked the 996's security module's location clearly never owned an e30 with a roof as it's central locking module is located inside the driver's side A pillar and fails when the area fills up with water...

I guess they can't all be Wernher von Braun. However, he did have a few V2's self destruct along the way.

In it to win it:

https://bringatrailer.com/listing/1973- ... 14-2-0-27/

Another museum board member (who's a 356 guy) sent me the link as I hadn't seen it yet. Once I stopped hyperventilating, I realized it's not all it's cracked up to be. Sure, it is a 1973 ravenna green 2.0 car. But, problems:
1. It's on BaT. That means it's going to sell for top of the market. Plus the 5% buyer's commission. I don't know if you guys know this about me or not, but I'm cheap. I'd prefer to find one listed on Facebook Marketplace in Backwaterville, USA for sale by the widow of the original owner who took immaculate care of it, but the widow just wants that ugly green POS out of her garage after all of these years and is willing to part with it for $5,000 or so.
2. It was originally a 1.7 liter car. It had an engine swap, so the numbers aren't matching. Not a big deal, but . . .
3. Since it was originally a 1.7 liter car, it doesn't have the same suspension as the 2.0 liter cars (basically anti-sway bars). Not a big deal, but . . .
4. It's driver quality. Rock chips, minor rust, crack in the dash, rip in the driver's seat. Not a big deal, but . . .

Bottom line, it isn't the car for a collector or a purist. So, I might have a shot at it. But, I won't overpay. Assuming the X1/9 comes through its color change with a quality paint job at under $4,000, I might be better off buying a mechanically sound car that needs a paint job, and just do a color change to Ravenna Green. There's one in Little Rock, AR, right now that would be a good candidate. It's a '74 1.8 liter car in sunburst yellow. I think I could pick it up for $7,000. Fix some minor rust, do the repaint, light rehab on some of the interior, budget $1,000 for some mechanical stuff that it will probably need, and I could end up with a really nice looking and driving car for about $13k.

Must_Resist_Running_Up_The_Bid_!

Seriously Good Luck with the auction. Not a bad looker at all. With all the dipsticks whining about the listing being deceptive and picking the car apart for not being factory correct it might keep the cost down. Fingers crossed for you.
