I might just do that! Looks like you guys have fun. I know I've been talking about that in the past, but I was uncertain about the longevity of the engine. Seems for good reason now.

That's kinda what got the whole award thread started but we were instructed we couldn't speak of the VI.

Had a bad scare yesterday that may or may not be resolved. Pulling into Habit Burger (which is great, by the way!), I heard a loud screeching noise from the left rear (I think that's where from, these things can get distorted). I pulled into the parking lot and checked out underneath and around wheels, but couldn't see anything.

It sounded to me like something in the brakes. The sound was rotational and did not happen when I rev'ed the engine, but did happen in neutral when the car was rolling. Definately wheel-related and it sounded like when I really screwed up the parking brake on the 928 (don't ask).

Now. I am generally conservative about using the car when something is wrong, but I was also 15 minutes from my house and home alone this week with a four month old puppy. So, I decided to drive it home. The sound disappeared about halfway home and did not return on a subsequent spirited drive later in the day. I did engage and disengage the parking brake a few times at a light, not sure if that did the trick though.

My thinking it is one of a couple things: Some part of the parking brake is stuck (and is now unstuck). Something got wedged in the brakes, like a rock, and now its unwedged. Or it could be the wheel bearing at an early stage of failure so it comes and goes. I think the last is least likely, because the sound was really loud and screechy, now there's nothing. I'm not sure anything this loud would go away entirely if it was an intermittent failure. But that's me hoping, because I can't do a wheel bearing with the tools I have at hand.

Plan of action is to take both rear wheels off and the calipers, see if I see anything. After that, take off the rotors and see if the parking brake is damaged.

This will be it. A rock got thrown up between the shield and rotor. Makes a god awful noise until it falls out. Scared the crap out of us the first time it happened years ago with my XK8 (days after having a BBK installed on it too) and has been unsettling the 4 other times it's happened since.

What seems to work for me is to get it off the road to some where you can drive it forward and reverse a few times and that will pop it out.

I did have one in the 996 where that trick didn't work so I took it to the shop for them to look (just in case) and it fell out as they raised the car on the lift At least they are a good shop and didn't charge me for the "work"

I would say that if it doesn't come back in the next few drives, don't worry about investigating further.

My money's on the rock theory also. Sometimes simple stuff can seem really scary. A couple of months ago, I bought a Ford Explorer at the auction for an employee. It drove fine at the auction and on the 1/4 mile long test track where the max speed is 50 mph (unless I'm test driving something really cool). Anyhow, as soon as I get out on the highway headed home, all hell broke loose. I pulled over on the shoulder because I thought maybe a wheel bearing gave way and the right front wheel was going to fall off. Quick inspection and some tugging on the wheel reveal nothing. Long story short, the alloy wheels had hollow spokes open from the backside. They were filled with mud, making the the wheel horribly out of balance. Knocked the mud out and all was well. Same thing can happen with snow.
