First, it protects your catch. Second larger palagic species will come closer allowing for a better shot at the big one.

Why would you wear a stringer if you're shooting palagic fish? lol Most pelagic fish I've caught are larger than me.

I haven't been spearfishing in a while, but any open water spearfishing, I ran a break away set on my 60" daryl wong with 3 floats and a bungee along with a seperate float and tag line for the back up shot. Wearing a stringer in the midst of this is just straight up foolish.

I like a thread where we can share fish pics. My dad has been fishing his entire life, and has worked his way up to owning a few toys to indulge in his passions. Naturally, I've been fishing since I could just about walk because of him. Here's a the largest fish I've caught to date. I think this was about 6 year ago. It's a good day when you need to get the hydraulic crane to move the fish.

Trust me, they are!
Billy, yes and yes.

You don't deep sea dive for the big boys with a stringer around your waist. But while shallow water diving near the ledges, Ono, Mahi or Ulua will come in and investigate on occasion. We speared a Mahi in 12' of water once.

Isn't that called "chumming"?

Similar concept, but different intent. Chumming is used with a slurry or whole fish, the point is to attract fish with the scent.

A stringer is used to secure the fish after you've caught it. So like chumming, you have dead fish throwing its sent out there. A stringer goes through the gills and mouth. I keep mine on my float if I'm diving on a reef. Reason? I am a soft meat bag, and don't want someone else's dinner dangling behind me on my waist. I've seen lots of sharks, but it's only the ones I don't see I would worry about. Aside from that, I don't use scuba gear. At 80', I don't need to be hung up on something because a loose stringer is caught on something.

There are two main types of stringers. Solid ones and ones that use a cord. You get the idea.

My dad with his girlfriend's god daughters from Tahiti. My dad was the only one upset. He ran out of cooler space and had to come back in early. Still smiling though!

SV: "Chumming" was my feeble attempt at a joke. I understand chumming and stringers, although I was a fresh water fisher-kid and only had to worry about Northern Pike and Muskies as far as biters! Saw a story a while back where somewhere on another continent suddenly tourist were getting more than normal shark bites, all in the posterior or upper thigh. Root cause turned out that local tour folks were taking tourist out to have them witness the feeding of sharks. Ok, but the workers wore a basket of fish pieces around their waist hanging in the back. Didn't take the local sharks to see where the fish were coming from...!
