Kevin - I know a guy with a 4-poster lift who will let you use it anytime. But, I, your jacket and your driveway all agree that you need to get an old-school, deep-wall drain pan and get rid of that fancy one!

Re: What did you do to/with your 996 today?
I know I could have used your lift, but it was a beautiful day & I had all the ingredients- so I charged into it.
The real irony is that I had just bought an 11 qt open style plastic drain pan...but decided not to use it since there was plenty of clearance with the old one to catch the oil sample. Bad call.
Come late March 2020 I’ll be needing both an oil change and new brake fluid...maybe pads....so I may try using our mutual acquaintance in Grandview.
But for now- it’s done!!

I have started placing some sort of absorbent material under and around my catch pan. Old age, yeah I feel ya there. At 69 I might do one or two more on the rebuilt engine but after that I will probably go to my Indi. I buy the DT40 and the proper spin on filter and take it to my Indi. He doesn't have a problem with that. He has already made a crap load of money off me so...Einsteiger wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2019 1:13 pm Today: oil change - six month mark, 1,265 miles. Following the LN Engr play book. Used Driven DT40 again, NAPA gold filter, with the filter magnet thingy.
A great weather day, but this still will likely be my last DIY oil change if we stay in this house. Even with the ramps, it was still crowded, really hot, and I spilled about 1/2 gallon on the driveway because the flow over-ran my drain pan / recycle container. I won't even mention my hassles with the ramps. I used the floor jack on the left one just in case.
OOPS
IMG_1901.jpg
I cut open the filter with my new cutting tool and the filter element was good - no observed debris and the filter-magnet-thing had just a smear of crud on the inside of the can. Note to self: put the magnet near the bottom of the filter, to make it easier to cut open and look inside with the magnet in place.
The drain plug had barely anything on it.
My whole adult life I've always enjoyed doing my own car work - at least what I could do - but age is creeping up and the fatigue and the memory paranoia [did I replace the drain plug washer?] make it an easy decision to let the pros do this going forward. As long as they will get me the DT40 and the right filter. No more Mobil 1 for this old dog. I took a sample to send off to SPEEDiagnostics. I'm anxious to see what the next report has after switching to DT40 in March and driving my 996 according to the Gospel of Raby.
I have yet to do an oil change and not get oil in the driveway. I've been saving big cardboard boxes to put under the mats I usually use. I've also got an 'open' catch tray that tends to catch more of the oil. But then I have to pour it from the open one to a closed one to get rid of it.
I still don't trust anyone to do it and it already costs me enough to buy 9 qts and the filter.
Mike

Yeah, I worry about my Indi and the 19#'s only of torque on the LN magnet plug. Every time I do it my brain says "Is that enough?" but it seems to work.OceanBlue2000 wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 6:05 am

Re: What did you do to/with your 996 today?
I forgot about the torque spec on the LN plug. OOPS. I had a new 3/8 drive T-wrench in the box, too. I used the ratchet and when it felt snug and that aluminum washer seated with an almost inaudible ping, I stopped.
My issue with indys is that even the ones that know Porsche don't always treat the M96 as they should. Over-filling is common, so that's why I add 8, run it, let it sit over night, THEN go out to check levels and top off. Which I am about to do right now.

I use the ramps up front and then jack the rear and place jack stands under the cross member to get it level.Einsteiger wrote: ↑Sun Sep 29, 2019 1:13 pm Today: oil change - six month mark, 1,265 miles. I put another 250 miles on the 996 yesterday, about half of it up and down Pacific Coast Highway (Highway 1). PERFECT day for driving - cool, mostly sunny. The BIG money cars weren't out due to the 10% threat of rain, but there were still plenty of Lambos, Ferraris, Astons, and other toys out and about on display.

You need to sell it as a roller ASAP! When can I come pick it up?Einsteiger wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 7:03 am I forgot about the torque spec on the LN plug. OOPS.
