The 997 alternator fits and works, for considerable less money...

I wish I knew that then! I probably could have swapped an alternator out myself if I was able to diagnose it fast enough.

its a bit of a pain, but if you have a set of sockets, ratchets and a pry bar, yea, you could have done it in the driveway.

I did the alternator in my 928 after having it rebuilt. That was probably easier given how much more room is there in the engine bay.

Maybe, but then there's the 368 other things you'd find on a 928 that need fixin' once you're in there.

There's one guy in the local club that has a 928, and that care is constantly being worked on. He just won't leave well enough alone. It starts as an oil change and ends up as a rotisserie resto.

True, but at the end the list of things that car needed were so long it had the opposite effect. I just wanted to drive it.

That's the way I am with my 928 - I just want to drive it rather than think about all the projects I could be doing. I still maintain it, I just don't expect it to be perfect.

Not something I did, but a weird data point. I drove the car into the city for work yesterday because I don't have enough frustration in my life. On the way out, I got stuck in traffic. The one thing that worries me in this car is overheating, because I feel like it runs hot although checking in the forums, everyone's car seems to run the same. Anyway, just sitting in traffic idling the temp gauge was right in the middle of the zero in 180. This eased my mind a little, since that is in the range of acceptable temps.

HOWEVER, once traffic cleared up and I got moving again, the temp started to rise until the pointer was past the end of the zero. This is still fine, I guess, but I always observed that once a car gets moving and air flow improves to the radiators, engine temps should go down, not up. I understand the engine was working harder than at idle, but in every other car where I watched temperatures, moving the car sent the temp down.

Any ideas? Also, I am not crazy. I cleaned the radiators last spring, so they should be running ok. Is this a sign my fans aren't working?

Turn on the AC. Get out and walk around the front of the car. Both drivers side and passenger fans should be running on low. Put your hands under the front of the front wheel liners. You should feel the air moving. If you have Durametric, you can turn the fans on to check them. I live in Florida and sometimes after running errands, I pull in the garage and the car sounds like a hovercraft. AC on high and both fans running on high. Can't mistake that.

When you got off idle the water pump is turning faster. It flows more coolant and pulled some of the heat out of the engine, so the gauge went up a bit.

I agree - maintaining temp at idle would indicate the fans are working properly.
