Awesome news. So glad one 996 was saved from Copart’s purgatory dismantler wait station. Now if you could rub a little of that 996 dent-away on Cuda’s car, we’d be complete for the Christmas holidays.

Today I installed one of two CG Locks that I got for the 911. Driver side today. I got one for the passenger side for an instructor - I hope to do a lot of DE work next season.

One tip for the 996 with the CG Lock - I ended up using the medium length screws to get it clamped on the buckle correctly. Also, my Snap-On racheting screwdriver with a little torx bit [S2 - T8H] made the install a lot easier than using the little angle wrench supplied with the unit.

I have learned two things from this process:

1) Respraying your wheels isn't that hard - but it isn't idiot proof either. I screwed up a couple of attempts; in both cases, not enough prep was the root cause.
2) If you're going to bother doing a decent job - i.e. masking shit off well enough that you don't have rattle-can overspray on your sidewalls - skip the removable stuff and go with real paint, either wheel paint rattle cans or something better in your air sprayer.

I wasn't sure I was going to like the color, so I'm glad I tested it out - but I should have just stripped the test wheels and painted them properly. This peelable stuff (despite the different name, it's just PlastiDip) is not durable; if you look at it funny, it needs touchup...and touchups with a spray can seldom work out all that nicely when you have to try to fill a gouge or scratch.

I took a photo of one of the better (passenger) wheels this AM...

Hey Schnell,

Love the color of those wheels. Are they anthracite grey metallic? Or what color?

I met a guy at the local cars and coffee that had some 18" 993 Turbo Twists for sale. He had just had them power coated anthracite grey but didn't have any center caps. They were a stomping great deal... basically bought them for what he paid for the power coating. But I would like to paint the caps to match. I could contact the pro shop he used, but I'm sure they'll charge me an arm and leg for painting the caps. Any ideas? I guess I could do a test of some major brands, but I went to Walmart and Home Depot looking for Rust O anthracite grey, but both stores didn't have anything close nor did Advanced Auto. Advice appreciated. Attached is a picture of them...

Those look great, b3. They'll look sharp on your black car! I would reach out to that shop and just see. I'd be surprised if it's more than $20/cap. Though, you're pretty handy with a rattle can so maybe you can get it close enough for $20 for all four.

Either way, congrats!

If you can get the paint, just mask off a set of factory caps and blast 'em with the rattle can. Don't use nuclear-strength masking tape - you don't want to peel off all that paint you carefully mask off.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Yea, thanks Doc! I must admit I got the grey turbo twists bug ever since Schnelly replaced his wheels and painted them dark grey metallic. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to the center caps. I've seen people paint their 996 wheels a dark color, but then put the standard light silver caps on them. Just doesn't look right, IMHO. I guess my best course of action would be to email and ask the shop. At least that won't cost me anything. The owner had a set of center caps, but neglected to ask them to paint them along with the wheels. Oh well.

I see PlastiDip makes a Anthracite Grey Metallic paint.

What color did you use on your wheels?
