996 C4 Tiptronic

Post by jweglarz » Thu Apr 05, 2018 8:21 am

After leaving car for a couple of weeks in below zero temps, battery went flat, tried to recharge, but battery totally dead. Replaced with new battery and car has lost all drive. Can put into drive or reverse, switches will allow me to select 1st or 2nd, but no movement. Car drove perfectly prior to this, so suggest something has gone wrong with electronics.

Any ideas ??

Sounds like a really annoying coincidence. The computers all get reset after replacing the battery in such a situation, but I don't *think* that is related.

My guess is that you already had an issue creeping in and the temp changes caused some expansion/contraction that pushed it over the edge.

I vaguely remember from this thread that there are some connections and cables involved. Maybe the temps caused one to disconnect?

Given the ordeal he went through, however, I would suggest that you find someone that really knows the cars and transmission. I don't think Kalash has any more transmissions to give away ;)

For what it's worth, our C4 has survived 17 winters outside some with long stretches of sub-freezing temps where it can get parked anywhere from a week to over a month including when it's been buried by snow and we just wait a couple of months for it to melt out again. Worst we've had is slow starts and it drives off just fine. It's a 6MT though.

Check shift linkages? Seems like that was the problem with the first tranny in that saga you linked to. And also the general consensus that the automatics in these cars are pretty bulletproof. It may be something simple - possibly needs a reflash?

Let the car dry up and warm up. I've read that some people had issues with their tips when they got very wet or when it was cold. Fluid got into the connectors and car appeared bricked, then it dried up/warmed up and was good to go.

Good advice Kalash!

Makes me wonder about KK (from NC) and his "trip with the wrong tranny". There's no telling how many threads I've read about Porsche tip transmissions where the owner thinks the tranny is going bad only to find out it was just the linkage. ... or, TCU? Makes me wonder if KK had sent his car to a more knowledgeable Porsche shop if his car could have been saved from the beginning. I mean really, how many P-cars have you heard of toast TWO tip transmissions? The poor man got screwed twice. I think the second guy truly was helpful. But think about it... Dennis the menace installed BOTH of those transmissions. Think about it. This is not rocket science here... not hard to put 2 and 2 together. Lesson learned about taking your Porsche to just anybody. They can basically screw your car over and get away with it. Poor KK had well over $30,000 in a car that was probably only worth $20,000 IMHO. But guess you heard he sold it as a roller. The next owner was going to post the progress in getting it back on the road again, but there was no follow up posts on KK thread.

Kalash, since I can't log in to the "other site". Why don't you follow up with that KK thread and see if that guy got the transmission running again.
