What failed, bearing or impeller?

Wow, that's a bad leak there. Water pump? I would think a hose ruptured with that amount of spill. Keep us updated.

Yeah, classic water pump looking failure. Looks just like mine a few years back.

I think a lot of us have been through that repair and while not cheap it should last for some time. Enjoy the reunion!

Thanks! The reunion was fun (40 years). Have not been up that late in quite a while LOL. Saw a bunch of people that I had not seen in a long time.

I suspect the bearing failed, which allowed the impeller shaft to wear and cause the out-of-round situation so the coolant leaked around the impeller. Oddly when the pump was running it would not leak, but would spew coolant when the engine was off. This was a factory Porsche water pump, but I don’t have the service records to know if it was replaced at any point - if original it has 75,000 miles on it. So I could have probably driven the car to the shop, but that would have been playing with fire.

Tomorrow I will be at the shop as the low coolant light is flashing - if they still have the old pump will take a picture.

Glad you had a good time.

Update on the water pump - the pump was gone when I got to the shop for the coolant top up. But all seems good now, so will keep driving and fixing other stuff. Next project is to get my convertible top back in alignment.

There will always be something else that needs to be done. It's the nature of the beast. Kind of like being perpetually stuck in an escape room - you're always trying to figure out the solution to a problem. But, where would the fun be if it was like a Honda Civic and never needed anything, right?

Take it easy - I was just referring to the base model Civic. Not the high end Civic XR4Ti model like yours.
