I saw that thread. I feel bad for the guy but he bought a car already ticking, then gets upset when people try to help. People on that thread told him he had a major issue, he continued to drive it, and ended up with the worst "look what I found in the oil pan" picture I've ever seen. The first comment should have ended the thread: "You can skip the UOA on this one."

I think he had cancelled his aftermarket warranty when he went to them about the bore scoring and expected something to be done. I wonder if he had kept it, if it might have been covered? I too felt bad for him until he called others idiots for having FSI rebuild their motors

I am willing to bet $100 that 12 mo from now his car will be still in pieces. I have never seen story like his culminate with a happy end.

Your new neighbor is a mechanic and he promised he will help you completely rebuild your engine for free with probably 100 hours of work involved... All after you met for the first time? And that engine, it is M96 motor with no publicly available torque specs or engine documentation? I think Jake is the only guy who reverse engineered it enough to know all specs and tolerances.

His cheapest route is to buy a used M96 and roll the dice. Proper rebuild will probably make his all on cost of the car double.

AWDguy did it, but it took a LONG time and last I saw before the Great Split he was trying to sell it as it still wasn't quite right.

He invested the time in the proper tools and listened to people though. I don't think this guy will do that...

On one hand I feel for people who aren't used to the internet; that happen to stumble upon the glorious bounty that is the commentariat.

Then he started with the "You don't know how many lives I've saved, orphans I've adopted, sexual assaults I've prevented" and my attitude quickly shifted to:

I don't think they have an engine rebuild manual, but the 996 page on FB has a pretty decent document collection.

If y'all know about this already, sorry to be Captain Obvious

You're exactly right on Porsche documentation! Jake and I have been planning/producing an "M9X" rebuild video series for almost a year now. This series will be the only thing like it on the planet. Right now, it's looking like a 20-part series. There is a tremendous amount of editing involved. Four full months and counting. We're going to be pushed to have it ready for Amazon Prime by Christmas.
