The Chinese 996 is NOT the 996 you want

Post by 5chn3ll » Mon Apr 15, 2019 9:40 am

For those of you unaware, in China "996" is not a vehicle - it's a concept:

You go to work at 9AM and work until 9PM, six days a week.

I've done that schedule - because startup - and I still do it from time to time, but I'm not sure it's the most humane way to treat your workforce...

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Joys of having more people than work I suppose...

What's sad is how many established companies (looking at you Amazon, Apple, Facebook, Google, Twitter, etc..) demand (by you not getting raises/promotions and being on the short list at layoffs) that of American workers.

I got value out of 18-20 hour days 7 days a week for years in my early days when I was making my name and learning. Now 40 hours is all I'll sign up for and any additional work is purely at my discretion.

I won't claim to be better enjoying life, but if they aren't going to pay me for those extra hours and not hire extra staff to fit the workload, then it's simply not my problem...

If your business can't pay people a living wage on a humane work schedule maybe your business isn't profitable after all?

I'm not sure - on one hand, requiring Chinese people to work for far less than their American counterparts for much longer is inhumane; on the other hand, most other developed nations underwent their own industrial revolutions and experienced this same phenomenon. China has essentially mandated the reallocation of an enormous segment of their population from rural/agricultural to urban manufacturing.

It appears that the Chinese are enjoying an amazing success, but then again it seemed hugely successful when the Brits did it during their colonial era, and I think it's safe to say that not all of those former colonies did especially well with maintaining/advancing their technology and infrastructure after the contraction of the British empire. While the overlords in this case are not foreigners, the distinction between the labor class and the owner/manager class is just as (or more) entrenched; those folks working on an Apple assembly line aren't any better equipped to contribute toward the future of the China than the folks who kept planting rice seedlings instead of moving to Guangdong to build laptops.

There were times in my management days that starting at 9a was called banker hours and 9p was just dinner time before going back to work. Those were the "good" old days...

I actually work 9am to 9pm, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Really. But I work from home and when I die I will receive total consciousness. Which is nice.
