Re: Anyone know much about 3d printers?
Printer belongs to the company, and it paid it self off on the first part it made. People think that you can throw metal to a CNC mill/lathe, push a button, and go. There is a ton of prep work that goes into programming, fixturing/work holding, tooling, etc. It's terrible to do low volume work. I wanted a "just push the button" set up. I used to use Stratasys printers, but their proprietary slicer and proprietary (and extremely overpriced. A spool of ABS was something like $250 per roll, even with our discount) material got old fast. Repairs were lengthy and expensive. You could just buy a new UM3+ anytime the Stratasys needed something and still end up saving money.

I dunno - it was one of those places where they had a bunch of that computer stuff. My computer guy made me go there to pick up some boxes he ordered for the office.

Your computer guy lets you touch any hardware at any point?
He's more trusting than I am.

Sorry if this is an Enzo, but GODDAMN. Continuously extruded carbon-fiber matrix, allegedly as strong as aluminum.

Now that would make a pretty cool indestructible toy tug boat.
Never gonna make you cry...
Re: Anyone know much about 3d printers?
Carbon fiber is strong enough for n/a intake parts and all sorts of other cool applications. The company that makes that model also makes a high-end metal printing unit, but I suspect it will be out of my price range forever.
They also offer metal part 3D printing as a service, which is pretty wicked:

Re: Anyone know much about 3d printers?
Hey Schnelly, been having some print issues lately. Any ideas?
That was the result of trying to remove a jam and the nozzle wouldn't come off. The wrench slipped off the block and this is what I found this morning when I tore it down.
Joking aside, I did finally get the nozzle off, clear the jam, and other than needing a Live Z adjustment it was still printing flawlessly. So well in fact I figured I couldn't have bent the heat break like I thought. Figured that maybe some of the plastic housing had gotten soft and deformed instead.
