I echo 100% rule that must be followed is no chatting - verbally or typed. Otherwise he shouldn't be able to charge $1,000 to his parents CC or other concerns like that with Minecraft as it's not a free to play game. Beware of "free" games.

But, yeah, no chat.

Actually other than the initial app cost MC is free to play. You can, of course, purchase things, but they can build and play with it without spending money.

Luckily in addition to be trustworthy about staying out of things we tell him not to go into, he also already has a goal of being a millionaire. He plans to get there is to not spend any of his money. Thus whenever he asks for something we don't want to spend money on we simply say "sure, if you are going to pay for it". There is a few minutes of whinging about "but then I can't be a millionaire!", but then he drops the subject and we don't have to spend the money or deal with a tantrum

This is how video games should be - you buy the game, you play it, end of story. The fact that you had to say "you can play for free after you buy it" makes my young video game heart cry for the days of yore. I was meaning to caution against the new-er model of "Free to play" or "Freemium" games where you download the app for free, play the game for free for 15 minutes until you find out you need to buy gold with real money to play any further or progress in the game.

Minecraft is great because even at a low cost it's what we call a "paid" game or in Android land "Premium" You buy it, you own it.

Yeah I got out of gaming around the advent of WoW as the major games are started killing of single play for the multi player online garbage and/or inserting these ridiculously difficult puzzles.

When I want to play a game I don't want to think or interact with others. I just want to burn time and brain cells.

My 9 year old has been playing Minecraft for at least a year. As others have noted, playing on the internet with others is verboten.

You can 'kill' animals, which was actually concerning for a little while. But the game has its redeeming qualities, including the ability to build and craft things, which requires some creativity and thinking ahead. The baddies are pretty tame, but that's up to the individual kid, obvs.
