Exhaust Mod (Fister/Gundo Style)
So I bit the bullet and decided to modify the exhaust/muffler as per many video's on youtube. (Fister/Gundo..not sure which mine is?)
I won't go into too much detail as there is a wealth of info out there but all I can say is it was easy and cheap plus the sound is perfect.
I was a little hesitant as with all mod's like this there is the risk it would just be too loud, it would sound cool for a bit but just get annoying after a while, this however is not the case it just makes it sporty and not obnoxious with no drone at all.
At $138 Aus Dollars I think it was a bargain, in regards to removal and installation took all up about 30mins, very simple.

Nicely done. I’m hoping to find someone in my area that can do this, rather than shipping the mufflers out to California.

I don’t see why you would need to my guy was just a standard exhaust place but very helpful, I took in the photo of what I wanted and said do that.
Plus shipping mufflers is expensive and no guarantees they arrive in one piece if your transport is like ours!

I may just use your photos once I fnd a shop. I think most of the non-turbo 996 mufflers are the same.

That's the "Gundo" hack - it's not as aggressive as the Fister mod. Gundo cans seem much more popular in cars frequented by wives/families.
These are "Fister" cans. Note that the sport exhaust knock-out is not used - instead, the piping is joined to allow some exhaust to bypass the muffler entirely.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

They do look different to mine that’s why I went that way as the fister isn’t as straight forward.
I guess it comes down to what muffler style is on your car.

The presence or absence of the knock-outs doesn't matter for the Fister mod. The cans on my '99 did not have the obvious knock-outs for the sport exhaust option.
I don't understand why the Fister mod would be less straightforward - connecting one pipe to another pipe with a section of pipe seems less risky to me than cutting a hole into the wall of the muffler and trying to join two different wall thicknesses. You can screw up and repair the Fister mod a whole bunch more times than you can the Gundo - which makes the Gundo much more prone to death-by-shitty-welder, at least in my rank amateur opinion.

With the mufflers shown in Metrod's posts, which are the same as my '99 C2, there just ain't a lot of room between those two existing pipes. Spanning the two in that limited space would be something for the experienced welder- and so far I have not found any muffler shop around me that's willing or able to try it. If they say "well, gee....we can try..." I move on. There has to be someone in this metro area that's done this kind of job before. Asking around at the local PCA breakfast might turn up something.

This image shows the joint a little more clearly...it seems less intimidating from this angle.
