914 Edition of Ebay, Craigslist and other online Finds

Post by FRUNKenstein » Mon Feb 12, 2018 7:40 am

OK, I have decided that I'm not buying another car until the following events occur:
1. I get my current stable of cars up to snuff. Lots of little stuff that needs to be done on them. No sense buying another mouth to feed and maintain until I can get the ones I have taken care of. (Hell, the A8L alone may make it so that I never buy another car)
2. We get our other financial priorities taken care of (we're about 4 years from having our house paid off, for example, so I'd rather push toward getting that knocked out than buy another car)
3. My wife gives me the thumbs up (she's been pretty patient with my car addiction - not as patient as Cuda's wife, but close).

So, naturally, I'm shopping anyway. 8-)

My mind is set on adding either a 914 or an X1/9 to the garage. Heck, if the price was right on the right cars, I might get both. X1/9s are still pretty cheap. It's the 914 prices that are quickly moving out of my comfort zone. So, the 914 is likely the next pickup. Especially one in the right color (and you all know what color that is).

So, let me see what you guys find out there. And it doesn't have to be just a vehicle, it can be anything 914 related posted up in here. I've always enjoyed collecting automotive memorabilia as well. Please post not only the link to an item, but also post a photo and at least some of the ad text. Links go away quickly on many auction or classified ad sites, so please preserve more for posterity than just a link that won't work a week after it is posted.

OK, I'll start, what do you all think of this ebay vehicle? I'm intrigued for a couple of reasons - the price is still below what I'd call my comfort level, the condition seems very good and the engine has been rebuilt and fortified a bit. 1974 model, 37,xxx miles. Current auction high bid is $9,151 (reserve not met). What do you guys say this car is worth? Will $15,000 buy it? $13,000? The seller describes it as a "driver".
Ebay auction text:
"Porsche did not make a red and black Limited Edition, but if they had, this is what it would have looked like. The paint is new-original color. The upholstery is new-original color and material. The carpeting is new-original color and weave. The engine started as a 1.8, but was rebuilt as a 2.0 from the crank up. It has Weber carburetors. I have lots of records dating back many years. The battery is new. The tires are good. I have gone through every part of the car. It is equipped with Bilstein shock absorbers on all four corners. It has 140# Weltmeister rear springs. It has an adjustable 21mm Weltmeister sway bar in front. The master cylinder has been upgraded to 19mm, and the brake lines are stainless steel. The tie rods are new. The windshield appears to be original. It has a period correct Momo steering wheel and a newer radio. It has a period correct rear spoiler that is painted to match the car, but has not been installed. The buyer may decide to install it (or not). As the photos show, the undercarriage is solid, no rust. The jack points are solid, no rust. The "hell hole" is solid, no rust. Nearly every piece of rubber has been replaced with quality materials from 914rubber. This is a driver, not a "trailer queen." It needs to be driven and enjoyed. I will cooperate with the buyer's choice of shippers, as necessary. Additional photos may be available upon request. "

This is an uneducated guess but, I have been watching 914 sales on BAT, 914 World, and a few other places. My guess is the reserve is likely $20,000+. If it can be purchased under $15,000, it would be well bought.

Even the junk 914 which would go for $2,000 a few years ago is starting to climb in asking price.

This is just my ignorant observation which is highly likely wrong.

Well, you probably are correct. At $15,000, I think I would buy it. It wasn't that long ago that $10,000 would buy something like this. After looking at the other 914 listings, I kind of wonder if it the reserve isn't north of $25,000 even.

If the car is as good as it looks in the pix, it should go for somewhere in the 20k range. Personally, i dont care for 914s that have been converted to carbs.

Mike - so the 914 was originally fuel injected? Was it a mechanical fuel injection? What is the advantage to going to carbs? What is the downside to converting to carbs? Is there a better way now, as in electronic fuel injection?

Wow, that red Arizona car sold for $15,000. Ebay shows it as "Sold", so our guess of $20,000 was optimistic. If I were seriously in the market, I would have bid on it at a little over $15,000 because I was thinking $15,000 would have been a really good deal and that it would likely sell for $20,000 to $25,000.

Re: 914 Edition of Ebay, Craigslist and other online Finds

Well, last Friday, 2/16, I got really close to buying another (red, of course) 914 that was on ebay:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1973-Porsche-9 ... EBIDX%3AIT

It was listed as a 1973, but was actually a 1974 model. I stumbled across it just a few hours before the auction ended and put in a bid. Lo and behold, I was the high bidder at $7,200 and reserve had been met. So, I reached out to the seller and traded a few messages and took a look at the title. Although I was quickly outbid, I had a number in mind that I was willing to go up to and thought I'd wait until the end of the auction to bid. Unfortunately, I got stuck in a meeting with a client and missed the end of the auction. High bid was $8,051! Arrgghh - that was less than I was willing to pay, even though I hadn't had the chance to do much due diligence. Even with shipping, that would have been solidly in the "if it turns out to be a POS, I still wouldn't get hurt that bad" range. Oh well, it would have royally pissed off the wife anyways, so maybe it's a good thing I didn't get it.

Here's the ebay ad text and a couple of pics:

1973 Porsche 914 1.8 liter 4-cylinder roadster
Work completed in the past 2 years...New clutch, fly-wheel, throw-out bearing, wires, spark plugs and rotor/rotor cap, new Duralast battery, new muffler, recent teardown/rebuild carburetor, recent tune-up and valve adjustment. Good interior, upper seats recovered, middle-dash refurbished, glove-box rebuilt, original center-seat/arm rest refurbished. New rubber sills on front and rear windows, rebuilt speedometer/odometer gauge, working tach gauge, later model fuel and oil temp gauge swapped out earlier in life, rare addition Porsche badge on front-lid. Fog lights refurbished and working (new glass and contact wires), sport side-view mirrors. Headlights fully functional (easy open and close). New fiberglass in front/rear compartments and on roof. Paint 5-years old. Two-year old tires and new wheels. Two original keys and door locks (fully-functional). Clean CA title, current CA tags, no CA smog required (pre-1975). Overall a very solid CA car.

Indeed. 914s were electronic FI, except the 914-6, which had carbs. The reason that many 914s get converted to carbs is often due to someone having a FI problem, can't figure out how to fix it, so removes the FI system. As far as I can see, there is no advantage, and several disadvantages, to converting to carbs.

Now, converting points to electronic ignition... that's a mod that is good. As are steel fuel lines. And High Tourque starter.

KC,

Outfitting our new home is getting expensive. I might be looking at selling my '73 914. Looking for about $17 or so. Car is in great shape, original FI.

I have its history back to 1986.
