hahaha... I got the c-clamp from government surplus. They must have had a problem with it being borrowed and not returned. Wonder if it someone threw it in surplus just for spite?

Re: CDR-220 finds a home

Post by B3DAWG » Thu Mar 08, 2018 5:20 am

Well, finally! Relocated all the cut OEM stereo cables and soldered them back together in the dash and amp area. As you can see from the pictures, Schnelly's CDR-220 slid perfectly back into center dash for the first time in a long time. yay! Everything plugged back up as it was supposed to from the factory. I checked the signals with a meter and now all that is left is installing HAES Harmann frunk amp. Stay tuned!!!

Nice radio. ;)

You might want to go get a can of bumper coat from Autozone and hit the left-hand knob so the color matches - when it was in my car, they were indistinguishable, but in your photos I can see the coated knob is a little lighter than the other.

The bumper coat worked well to encapsulate the original soft-touch rubbery crap that turns to goo after some amount of time in the car...

There's a dismantler in Georgia that should have interior odds and ends to get your interior back in shape.
Thank you DT. Any guesstimate of what the cost would be to have an indy flush all fluids minus oil change? :) Ok... I'm holding onto my seat.
Somewhere in the 300 - 500 range.

Thanks man! Sometimes I wonder if it's not better to just order new ones than spending the time and money trying to repair the old ones.

Is bumper coat a type of paint or is it some form of treatment like Armor All? :?:

Order a used replacement amp from Matt at Quality Porsche Parts and waaaaa laaaa... it works!!! :D

I must also admit the CDR-220/HAES amp matched to the original speakers sounds better than the aftermarket Blaupunkt/amp using the factory speakers. The amp must be performing some sort of EQ/crossover voodoo that makes the bass, midrange, and highs frequencies more separate and distinct. But I'm sure if you put a top notch Aftermarket system in the car matched with good speakers it will sound even better. I'm not into the boom systems, but rather, prefer a cleaner "jazz sound" in my car systems. In my last Carrera, the Blaupunkt frunk amp was feeding just the door subs, and it was overwhelming the mid-range to the point I had to turn the amp way down just to enjoy the music.

On this system, the weak point is the speakers. If you push it too hard with volume, you can clearly hear the speakers start to distort, especially the bass range. But it's still plenty loud using the factory HU/amp setup. I'm sure if you just used the speaker-level output at the HU (i.e. not using the frunk amp), with only 18 Watts output/ speaker, it probably wouldn't produce much volume without distortion.

When I was a kid in Atlanta, my father started an electronics store and TV repair center after leaving his engineering job with the federal government. He had great respect for the Becker radio company back in the day. He said they were about the only company that used the head unit/separate amp setup and the sound quality were top-notch. I explained to him recently that Becker's MOST based systems were the devil. haha He looked a little surprised, but realized, just like lawnmower Porsches and VW bugs, nothing lasts forever. No, I'm not starting to sing "dust in the wind"!

The Bumper Kote stuff is plastic spray paint. It's less hardcore than spray-on bedliner, but the same idea. If you don't get too freaky with the spray can, the results can be very good. The color it produces isn't quite black, but it worked to encapsulate the melting plastic of the stock radio knob...

Re: All charged up and ready for Summer

Post by B3DAWG » Mon Mar 19, 2018 5:55 am

Well, it's been getting pretty warm down here in the south. Nice temps hitting the 80s. Took the 996 to my daughter's track and field event and noticed the air in the car wasn't getting cold enough. It was cool, but not cold by a long shot. Found a simple video by Van Svenson on charging the AC system on our 996 cars. Charged my system and a took out this weekend to check... BIG improvement. It's really cold!

Hope this helps you...
