Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
I was driving to work when I had an idea for a really simple single-axis plasma cutter assitant, since what I tend to screw up most often is continuous straight cuts. A raspberry pi running a drone speed control and a beefy drone brushless motor turning cheap threaded rod...plus a clamp-on current sensor for the torch head so the pi will know when the arc starts and if it turns off...
...and a couple of limit switches so it can reset itself at the end of a cut. And a trim pot to set the material thickness. And some more fire extinguishers.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Well that would be as safe as a melting oven that produces a vessel of molten metal. I do vote for the more fire extinguishers plus having 911 on speed dial set up on any and all communication devices in the home.

You know...if you're going to go through the trouble of doing one axis...

For your project, however, I would suggest a NEMA stepper rather than a simple brushless motor. Additionally a belt drive with a wheeled V slot gantry it probably going to be more cost effective and accurate over more than a foot or 2.
Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
Steppers would be essential if I add a second axis, but for a glorified digital chop saw...

Dammit, Facebook hit me in the feels with this 10-year-old photo of the 986 I no longer have autocrossing in a stadium parking lot that no longer exists.
