FRUNKenstein’s 1987 944 Turbo

Post by FRUNKenstein » Sun May 17, 2020 10:34 pm

Bought the car in 2011 as my oldest son’s first car. He daily drove it 3 years in high school and 2 years in college before we retired it. It now has a little more than 110,000 miles. I have basically just finished restoring it back to a very nice driver level car. Here is what has been done to it in the last year (~1,000 miles driven during that time):

I gave the car a good detailing, including the engine bay today. It has now basically been brought to a very nice driver standard. In the past year:
TB/WP
Clutch
Tires
Thermostat
Porsche coolant
Battery
Belts
Armrest console
Front seats
Custom floor mats
BT stereo
Engine mounts
Fuel lines
Fuel filter
Spa time at body shop to fix warts

It’s not a concours level car, but it would look right at home in the museum. I think it is one of the nicest 944s in town.

Early June 2020, replaced alternator. While it was at the shop waiting to be picked up, a freak thunderstorm blew over and water ended up getting in the ECU via a misplaced grommet under the passenger windshield wiper. Had to have the ECU rebuilt.

On August 29th, replaced the battery. Old one lasted 5+ years.

On April 25th, 2021, changed the oil and filter at 112,989 miles. Used Valvoline VR-1 Racing oil, 20W-50 and Carquest premium oil filter.

Need to charge up refrigerant (R-134a) in a/c system, which I will do this weekend.

Installed a set of LED headlights I bought on Amazon:

Pretty easy installation, except the driver's side plastic housing caught on something when it retracted and broke a piece off. Will need to order a new plastic piece. Otherwise, I am very pleased with the increase in light output and quality over the old sealed beam units.

I could probably use a set of these for my 280Z.

They've gotten less expensive and better quality over just the past couple of years. When I was looking for a set for my blue 914 a couple of years ago, there was a lot of junk on the market, but a good set was over $200. This set was $115, but got them for like $93 on an open box deal. At that price, I'm putting them in all of my hooptie fleet except the 928 and 996tt.
