Going through 996 withdrawal - we've been in the mountains for over a week.

I think Sunday afternoon is the day I'll reinstall my shitty sport cats. They don't make the car any faster, but damn...they make it sound AMAZING. I don't have to be smogged again until September 2024...

Time to move to AZ man. Areas outside Phoenix and Tucson don't require emissions testing. And emission testing we do have is OBD II only scan every two years.

I am genuinely staggered that you and other Cali guys go through the hoops to get the smog and CARB compliance every two years.

And speaking of mountains. Snowbowl in Flagstaff is still rocking. Was boarding on Sunday.

We took Jr. on a snow trip to Flagstaff for his birthday this January. Love that place.

Well, I managed to get a ticket on Saturday morning- first one since 2014. But, it was a doozy: 31 mph over the limit. That’s gonna hurt.
But here’s the kicker - it was in the 914. While most of me was going “Dumbass, dumbass, dumbass,” a little part of me was going “Hells, yeah.”

I know the feeling. I got clocked at 108 heading into Palm Springs. The cop was nice, wrote me up at 80.
I fought the ticket and it was dismissed. Dodged that bullet

Hhhmmm...last time I got a speeding ticket was circa 1971 in my 1965 Sunbeam Tiger. 38mpg in a 25 mpg area. I paid the ticket and it was not that expensive, but I have never forgotten that empty feeling as I paid. It was just not worth it. These days after driving real race cars on a track speeding on the street is not that thrilling to me. I'm not saying I don't blast up to or exceed the speed limit occasionally but gross speeding...No Thanks.

31 over is going to be expensive!

How did you get to 31 over? Was it in a 5mph zone?

Down hill, with a tailwind.

Not joking about the down hill part, though. It was a major highway (Interstate 470) that has a huge hill leading to an intersection with I-70. The cop was sitting at the bottom of the hill, just past where it went from 70 mph to 55 mph speed limit. It was at 7:20 am on a Saturday morning, so traffic was very light. As you know, the speedometer on a 914 is at best a rough approximation of speed. And of course it was blocked by my aftermarket steering wheel. Bottom line, I was just tooling along minding my own business. I knew I was speeding, but figured I was going maybe 75 in a 70 mph zone. Sucks for me. Even though I haven't had a ticket in 9 years, I'll still try to have it amended to non-moving. Probably going to be $500 or more "amendment" though.

Once upon a time in my pre-996 days, I was ripping through the desert to get to a customer site in Tempe. Just outside of Gila Bend, AZ, the speed limit drops to preposterously low levels.

I had just set the cruise back to...ahem...75 when I noticed headlights coming up behind me...fast. I started easing the speed back slightly to something more reasonable; after about a mile, the AZ troopers lit me up. There were two of them - and apparently they'd decided that if I kept the speed rational, they'd give me a warning; if I opened it up, they were going to impound the Boxster.

For all the crap I've heard about AZ troopers, these guys were pretty cool.

Last ticket was in my 996, 72 in a 55 in rural Arkansas. The trooper was in the oncoming lane and crested a hill between us, and his instant-on got me. As I learned later, he would've written his grandmother for 56 in a 55...no margin for forgiveness. To his credit, he did be sure to mention asking the court clerk about a "no file" fee -- for an extra tenner, they would not enter any information on the ticket into the database. I happily paid that, plus the fine.

Two lessons learned:

1. Ask the court about receiving "deferred adjudication", a "no file fee", or similar. Keeping a speeding ticket off one's driving record can be worth a lot more than the cost of the ticket. There's a reason auto insurance companies are reportedly the largest contributors of speed radar sets to law enforcement agencies...
2. If you get ticketed in a Porsche, it's a "fun tax". It's not worth agonizing over. This is much easier to do if one is successful applying lesson learned #1.
