That's awesome that you were able to get out and drive! Glad to hear it.

We had KCRPCA Autocross on Saturday morning. I worked the back side of the course again and drove the '87 928S4 out early in the morning to help with set up. For my efforts, I got to take a lap. I was very pleased with the 928's performance. The big V-8 (5.0 liters) was great in the slow parts of the course. We had 2 Chicago boxes in a row right off the first curve, so the first 1/4 mile of the course was very slow. The 928 actually did pretty well in the slalom, too. I think it actually felt faster than the '87 944 Turbo that we took out last time. The 944 Turbo had a ton of body lean, and the 928 stayed flatter. Also, with the 944 Turbo, you have to keep the revs up for the turbo to be a factor, so autocross isn't the ideal situation for that.

max$wag drove the 996tt as an official participant, and he brought my nephew from Madrid out to spectate. We got the nephew a ride-along in one of the instructors' Cayman - he really enjoyed that. Max drove the 996tt on the first 3 laps. He managed to eat a couple of big green cones right before the slalom on the back side. Knocked my front camera out of the bumper.

Then, on the 4th lap, he took the 928S4. Although it was significantly slower than the 996tt, it looked good running through the course.
Well Max is not afraid of the turbro! Do you get a time penalty for killing a pointer cone or just for upright cones?

The 928 definitely looks more stable in tight corners.

Turbos...I feel your pain. Lag sux and it's difficult to keep them in boost even though the Honda's boost starts about 2.5k. I'm going to try riding the brake and staying with some throttle in tight sections. My guess is I'm going to be killing a lot of cones... I can't wait to try the 996. Currently waiting for tires and an oil change.
Never gonna make you cry...

Yeah, he got docked for taking out the pointer cones, but only one penalty rather than for each of the 3 cones he annihilated.

One thing about working the event is being up-close as the different models of vehicles are running. It is amazing how much better the Boxsters and Caymans (Caymen?) can pick their way through the tight sections of the course than the 911s. And of course the newest models have all of the electronic advantages. So, don't get too caught up in trying to best those guys with your 996. If you're running mid-pack with the 996 against 2 generations newer Caymans and Boxsters, then you're doing really freaking well.

That's funny. Around here the guys driving the old English cars are bitching all the time about the newer cars with power steering. I totally shut off all the nannies that I can when I AutoX. However, I haven't found the one that turns off the power steering.

Assuming it’s not electric power steering, you could just remove the belt off the power steering pump, right?

You know what is said about ASSUMING.

Dual-pinion(whatever that is) electric steering.

June AutoX was this past Sunday. Sunny 85f with 35mph wind gusts!

First time out with the aftermarket adjustable rear sway bar. BIG DIFFERENCE! I've got it set in the center which increases bar pressure by a little over 1/3 over stock. Understeer is gone unless I over-cook a corner or stomp the loud pedal while in a tighter turn(front wheel drive sux!). Even then it is not bad at all. I just need to learn how to drive it better with this improvement.

Results were ok and while the official timing list is not out yet I was within 2 seconds of the top guys. This includes two C8's, a purpose built Midget, a purpose built Sprite, a supercharged Bugeye and a couple of Miatas. Course was designed and massaged by a couple of long time SCCA AutoX dudes. It was fast and open with nothing real painful to get through.

AutoX is so much fun. I encourage everyone to try it.

Weather was perfect. Driving was ok. While official stats are not out yet my guess is I was middle of pack. Honestly I wasn't pushing too hard in deference to my still healing breast bone. It was still FUN! We each got 8 runs in and were done @ 2:30pm after starting at 11:00am.

Now here is my stupid: I set tire pressures early in morning before driving the car. It was @54f. After two of my last four runs I felt I was getting slower and figured the pressures were now too high because of use and ambient temperature was up to @85f. So I lowered the pressures back down to the morning setting. Last two laps felt ok but were the slowest of the day...and the fastest lap of the day was the one just prior to lowering the pressure. Once home I confirmed "fresh" significant rollover on the left front tire from the high speed sweeper...I'm a dumbass!
Only 8 runs? At the SDR AX we used to get 10 -15 practice runs and 4 timed ones and that was with sometimes 100 cars
