Garmin Catalyst
I got a Garmin Catalyst a few months ago. If you don't know, it's for track driving. Supposedly it identifies areas where you can improve your driving in real time, and can communicate them to you via voice over a bluetooth connection. It has other features too. Because it divides the track into small segments it tracks your performance over each segment separately. Afterwards it computes an "optimal" time if you had driven all the best segment times on the same lap. That isn't particularly novel, I have been using Track Addict which can do the same thing.
The neat thing about the Catalyst is it will stitch the segments together into a video of the optimal lap, which helps identify the visual cues that are needed to actually drive the optimal lap repeatedly.
Catalyst uses a camera lifted from Garmin's dashcam line and the tech that is used for lane departure warning systems to figure out where on the track you are driving relative to the track edges. GPS alone isn't accurate enough to do this. I can say that it does actually work, although I have not yet turned on the "advanced" race coach. It suggests improvements ("brake later" "turn in earlier" etc) immediately after the track feature.
Anyway, I have abused Schnelly's server to upload an optimal lap from Lime Rock Park a few visits ago. This event had a LOT of cars on track and the traffic was rather woeful. Combined with the yellow BMW and the White C7 Corvette that show up in the videos it was a challenge to get a decent lap. Hmm, now I see that 996outpost doesn't render videos internally. I'll upload it to youtube.
You can see the cars appearing and vanishing as the Catalyst stitches together the optimal lap.
There's two things that are not super great.
1. There is no integration to the car so thing like RPM etc are not available. So I keep using Track Addict as well, which reads some data from OBD2.
2. After the most recent Lime Rock Park event the Catalyst crashed and lost the entire session's data. Boo hiss.
I've tried some other devices for datalogging, I bought an Aim Solo 2DL and an Aim camera ($$$) only to find the Solo 2DL doesn't really work with the OBD2 on 996's and won't read the 996 CANBUS at all. Track Addict (free) with a $50 bluetooth OBD2 reader works better... neither solution can read oil pressure or oil temperature though.
I probably need a datalogging dash to get the data that I really want. Then I don't know how to really interpret the data either. That's the beauty of the Catalyst - it provides immediate feedback on how well you have done what you did. There's a related downside to the Catalyst, if you are doing things "wrong" it can only optimize the "wrong" thing that you are doing. So it's necessary to be generally doing "the right thing".

Ah, that makes sense.
I was going to introduce myself, but he looked busy enough that he didn't need some hayseed from Kansas wasting his time. Now, if either you or Schnelly would have been there, I totally would have wasted your guys' time. Mid-October is a great time to visit SoCal as the crowds are gone, but the weather is still great. Maybe next year (cue Schnelly making a note on his calendar to be out of town all of October 2024 ).

Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
BTW, when FedEx Ground loses one of 3 boxes that fulfilled one order from AutohausAZ, it's a major PITA. Honestly, I would have been much better off just writing off the 2 brake rotors they lost and re-ordering new ones (about $290 with shipping and taxes), as opposed to trying to track the box down through FedEx's system. Then, the hassle of trying to make a claim through FedEx, only to have to start a new one through the shipper (AutohausAZ). And, I still don't have the rotors, nor am I even close to having replacement ones sent out - I gotta wait another day and then fill out some more forms to officially file the claim through AutohausAZ. I should have just ordered another set last Wednesday when it became apparent that FedEx lost them.

Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
I have been reading, I don't really have anything to say.
Oh, I tried Harry's lap timer and I like Track Addict better. The integration with RaceRender is top notch.
I had some meetings in Philadelphia this week so I drove down in the Cayenne TTS.
The drive on the NJ Turnpike is as nutty as has been described. Cruising at 85, I was the slowest car out there. It took all16 PSI of boost to keep up with traffic.
