Re: Good Week @ 996Outpost.com
KCRPCA Autocross dates are:
April 20th (The Royals are in town that weekend vs Baltimore)
May 18th (I will be in Maui, so that's a no-go for me)
June15th
April 27th is The Car Affair event at The Underground (which will be a great evening event). I am sure we can setup a fun run drive earlier in the day, and of course there is the KCRPCA breakfast on Saturday morning.

Re: Back in Business
Very nice, Bobby! Congratulations!B3DAWG wrote: ↑Wed Jan 03, 2024 3:33 pm Yep, can't keep a good dawg down!
I'm back in the 996 business. 1999 (98 build) C4 Ocean Blue Metallic/Graphite Grey interior. 89K miles. All stock except the Alpine stereo. Surprisingly, this one has PSM. First '99 I've seen with it. Still has the original factory M96/02 engine. All passes on my Durametric. Clutch seems strong, but I can't find any record of replacement. I assume this has the original dual row IMS bearing, but I'll try not to start that replace-or-not-debate. ha!
The C4 drives smooth, even at higher speeds unlike my first two 996 C2 which would get squirrelly above 140 mph. (yes, I'm joking!)
So far, the wife and I have been doing simple stuff like giving it wash and wax, cleaning the carpet, applying leather dye to the worn and/or stained areas of the steering wheel, gear shift knob, and seat leather. Changed the oil, filters, and topped off all fluids. The only thing I haven't done is check the crankcase vacuum to rule out a failing AOS. I'll see if I can borrow a manometer when I'm at Jake's next time. But no smoke at start up and the tail pipes are pretty much free of soot. A testament to the earlier cars. Oh, and the Varicam wear pads are definitely in my future since they're right at 6 degrees of deviation from bank 1 to 2. But def no CEL or DTC fault codes. No range 2 overrevs and got full readiness status. Overall, everything works mechanically and electrically, except the sunroof (prolly the electric motor gone bad?). Hey, even the heat and AC work in auto mode. I was expecting the blend door problem effecting the heat, but it produces lots of hot air like most southern Waffle House waitresses.
Happy New Year!

Thank you Jeff!
Even though the sunroof issue is a bit annoying, the car really needs nothing, everything else works. The new sunroof motor comes in today and we'll see if that does anything. I'm also going to handle some preventive stuff (engine mounts, water pump, etc.) based on my history with these cars.
The car came with an Alpine system that appears to be professional installed based on the neatness of the wiring. However, the Alpine unit is an older model (2008) and time for replacement IMHO. Thankfully, Alpine hasn't changed it's connectivity and so it's pretty much plug-and-play. I've ordered an updated unit for now. Maybe in the future, I'll tackle a PCCM+, but at $1,300, that's gonna wait.
Cosmetically, the bumper and hood need a respray and so I'll probably wait until spring to handle that. I'm planning on removing the bumper to clean the radiators. I'm sure it's pretty nasty.
Tinkering with these cars is actually really fun. Driving them is better.

Re the sunroof: even though I like having one, I rarely open it. Although it would bug the crap out of me knowing that it didn't work. Still, it's a non-vital function that you can mess with at your leisure.B3DAWG wrote: ↑Mon Jan 08, 2024 7:37 am Thank you Jeff!

Re the stereo: Given that I've used Dual brand head units from Walmart that I paid $15.78 for (now up to a whopping $25 at Walmart) for several of the Hooptie Fleet, putting an Alpine system in is pretty deluxe in my book. I see a single-DIN Alpine system on Crutchfield.com for $119. Given the advancements in car stereos since your car was built in 1998, I think you're gonna be just fine with that Alpine.

Yep! The original motor was just free-wheeling. Install wasn't terribly hard. Basically, take out the center light/IR panel. Then unbolt the motor. Slide gently to the right, unplug and then pull it out of the head liner.
After the sunroof motor success, I decided (based on past experience) to replace the original driver side lock assembly. Got locked out last time and it ain't gonna happen again.
