Got the oh so fun CEL

Post by AnthonyS » Sat May 26, 2018 9:02 pm

P0430 cat efficiency bank2. Been hearing a tinny rattle at times too. Makes sense now after some research. Was looking at cat prices and think I will give the Top Gear guys a try. Might as well do both and go to higher flow. About the same price as used and will likely do great for me since I only drive this car 3k a year. By the time I need new ones again this car won’t require emissions testing in TX.

Only issue is top gear is currently out and lead time is 30 days :(.

Top gear finally got cats back in stock. Ordered yesterday and will arrive from the UK Monday! I will snap some photos. Only worry is that it’s so dang hot out now working on cars is pretty miserable.

The long wait was due to manufacturing and none in stock :(. I ordered them yesterday and they arrive Monday that’s fast. They are selling pretty quick too and they have lots of satisfied customers on RL. I need my CEL cleared so I can get legal again.

Well it’s been too damn hot in TX to work on cars. Too hot!

We are also selling our house, building new and moving. That is a royal pain.

So anyway tonight it’s finally in the high 80s after dark so I head out to start removal. I actually tried to remove some bolts Saturday morning but the rusty suckers just rounded off. So this week I picked up some rusty rounded bolt removal sockets at harbor freight. Tonight I removed the bolts on the big two bolt clamps and the small single clamps. Five of six busted! Rusty.... the clamps will be reusable but not the hardware. The clamps look galvanized but some screwball used regular steel hardware! Next up the six 10mm collector bolts and 4 O2 sensors. The top gear pipes come with new stainless collector bolts and gaskets.

I was already planning on new mufflers this winter but due to rust I may need headers too or at least a coating.

So KC if I end up your way next spring how about a museum tour and some lunch or dinner?

I didnt see you mention PB blaster or heat! Shouldve presoaked them with penetrating fluid the previous night. Are you using 6pt sockets?

Yes on PB blaster. It makes nice rust puddles on my garage floor with these bolts. Yes on 6 or sockets which still round them off. I will finish the install and take some photos this weekend. The bolts I’m removing look like someone submerged steel in salt water before Porsche existed.

Check out that your old hardware. Got new stainless hardware today. Everything going back together okay. The original O2 sensor wiring routing needs help. The two post cat sensors are further away. There is enough length in the factory harness but you need to pull the airbox and fiddle with it. I’m having hell with the slip on clamps. I wish I had a clamp spreader to make this part easier. I’d be driving it now if I had a good way to spread them. There may also be a contact issue where the cat pipes cross. After it’s all tight I will see.

And in added news one of my mufflers is splitting my open at the seam. Good thing I wanted to swap them out this winter. No fister mod for my bustedvass mufflers. I think I want the FVD ones based on all the sound clips I’ve heard. Headers? Maybe. They are okay but my muffler hangers are pretty rusty too. Good thing she’s a TX car now.
