Over the weekend, some guy posted up a photo of the ferrous debris he found in his oil filter, and the Facebook yahoos replied with jokes about IMSB paranoia. Consensus from the Facebook thinktank regarding flattened metal debris in your oil filter: NBD, just keep driving it.

I think I saw that post. People just do not want to believe these engines have the issues they do or that they are relatively powerless to keep some of the modes of failure away. You can only try and educate the masses so much.

I think I saw that post. People just do not want to believe these engines have the issues they do or that they are relatively powerless to keep some of the modes of failure away. You can only try and educate the masses so much.

To be fair there is a lot of fear spread around it too. I respect Jake, believe he has more knowledge about these engines than anyone else on the planet, and he is who I want to rebuild our engine at some point, but I don't agree with how far he takes it some times.

The reality is that the vast majority of these cars have been running between 15 and 20 years without issue and will more than likely continue to do so with minimal help. By all means if you are in there for something else you should take preventative steps (e.g. if the clutch is being done it's kind of silly not to go ahead and do the IMSB, if the plugs are being changed, scope the top of the cylinders, etc..), but doing work just to do work is silly.

That view just applies to preventative work though. If you have a symptom like this poor guy, you get that shit diagnosed so you can make an informed decision.

I will admit, however, that having a single owner car (e.g. we know it's entire history) that is her "forever car" makes it much easier to sleep at night. We don't have to guess if it was serviced decently through it's life (most would say it wasn't!), if it was mistreated, or if something doesn't feel right. I also have no doubt that sans it being really totaled (e.g. not just cause insurance didn't want to fix a few body panels) we'll resurrect it if something happens.

I'm on board with making fun of alarmists - but it's a dick move in the context of a post where some guy's engine is potentially swirling in the toilet bowl.

It also chafes me when people parrot decade-old failure rates on a wear item as some kind of universal truth. If you're too dumb and/or stubborn to recognize that any machine will eventually fail, don't crow about it on the Interwebs.

That sounds like fun! Exactly which 996 page are you guys talking about? Last time you guys brought up FB I looked around but didn't find the one with the extreme asshattery.
