Ok, here it is: I generally change my oil every six months or so. However, I last changed the oil in October. But since then, because of the weather, I've only driven it MAYBE 2,000 miles. It might be closer to 1,800 I would have to check.
So the question is, do I change the oil? I have heard that there are negative effects to changing oil too soon. I am under the impression that changing the oil regardless of mileage is more for monitoring than anything else. I'm at about 75K and the thing doesn't burn a drop (oil remains in the middle of the dipstick on checking in the morning).
I'd like to thank you for your patience in reading an oil question.

It's best to filter the oil during longer-duration changes. I drain the oil into a clean Home Depot bucket, then I suck up one mouthful at a time using a LifeStraw and spit it back into the filler tube. Takes a little while, and my mouth tastes like a Transformer's butthole for about a week afterward, but it seems to do the trick.
Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

It really depends on the oil you are using.
I find that while it provides a pleasant tropical smell, coconut oil will go rancid in a short time frame regardless of miles.
Olive oil has a pretty low mileage threshold so you need to stay on top of changing that frequently.
Canola has a higher threshold, but it's still pretty low.
Peanut oil is really time critical. If you find jelly in the filler tube you are way past due for a change.

Regardless of the mileage, the chemistry of the oil will change with time, as do the water and fuel loads. In my opinion, it's worth changing regularly, even with lower mileage - it's a relatively inexpensive opportunity to see what's going on with the car and look for anything amiss.
