Be in Scottsdale, be park car and walking to Diego Pops for meeting today. Be ready to cross Scottsdale Rd.
See classic mustang 66-67 coupe stop at the light and stall. Driver tries to crank 10 times but fails. Be walk over to help him push it aside.
His son gets behind the wheel. I say, let's try push starting it, he goes OK. Tell son to put in 2nd, clutch in, ignition on. We start pushing the car across intersection, son releases clutch and hits brakes . Gets out of the car, says he doesn't know how to do this... His dad gets back in, son and I now pushing it across 3 traffic lanes towards Montauk... Dad pops the clutch and manages to start it.
Success.

Some insurance companies offer a discount for cars with sticks as they act as a theft deterrent these days due to it becoming a lost art.
Bad on the dad that he has a MT car and hasn't taught his kid how to properly drive it though. I think my dad taught me around 12 or 13 when my legs got long enough to reach the pedals.
Might need to keep the POS BMW around for another 10-15 years just to make sure I have something to teach my boys on (it has a much more forgiving clutch (and is cheaper to replace) than the 996's. Being experienced I have the CDV that they inserted in there, but it does make it much better for a learner.

You would not believe the Type R forums as it relates to manual transmissions.(yeah I know "Rice-Rice-Baby) Most of the posters are younger and the threads opened about shifting problems are spectacular! "I can't get a smooth start on level ground in first gear. What am I doing wrong?" That was one of the more benign threads. I try to be the "mature gentleman" with experience and offer encouragement laced with bits of information. It is amazing as I compare the Type R to other manual transmission cars I have owned and find it to be the most forgiving of any. It even has the "HEY STOOPID! you aren't giving it enough gas when starting in first gear so I'll do it for you so the engine doesn't stall...STOOPID!" feature. It's challenging not to be abusive and derogatory but no-one learns from being berated. Well you can learn that way but it is unpleasant.gnat wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2019 8:17 am Some insurance companies offer a discount for cars with sticks as they act as a theft deterrent these days due to it becoming a lost art.

07 328xi we've had it since new. Mechanically it's actually been pretty solid. It just makes a joke of the "Ultimate Driving Machine" marketing and the interior really feels like we paid $40k for a $30k car...
Now a 325ix wagon. That is a car I want to get my hands on one of these days. Love me some e30 iX goodness

I think the kid may have panicked a bit and didn't know how push starting works. Car stalled on the main N/S road of Scottsdale at a very busy intersection in the middle of rush hour. Dad and I are pushing it through traffic into the intersection.... So I can see how kid could have got a little nervous.

Good on you for stopping to help BTW. So many people just drive by these days.
