If it was a bag of Lay’s, I would have already used gnat’s method.

Watching Jaws now. I have decided that I now want to be Captain Sam Quint when I grow up.

Any diagnosis, prognosis and treatment plan from the Indy yet?

This one is from the summer and it's a deep cycle, so once it gets charged it should be ok.

Indy thinks it could be the security module starting to go. He's seen weird shit like before due to it.

Nope. Charged the battery while I waited, then I drove off for a 45 minute romp through the higher RPMs.

Will just keep an eye on it doing more weird shit and go from there.

That is interesting. I am assuming you had the car locked which will kill the "looking for keys" system so I wonder what is the power drain. Why would a dying battree lower a window? How could a dead battree crack the window when the door is opened but then not roll it back up when the door is closed?

I am confused.

The window did not roll down when the door was opened, it was already in the drop position when I first opened the door. The car was still locked when I went to open the door.

I know that as late as about 8 Saturday night the window was still up and the security light on the dash was doing it's normal blink (so it had some power). By 11 the next morning the window was down and the battery was dead.

My guess is that the security module is indeed starting to go and that it freaked out somewhere in that time range and started doing weird shit (like rolling the windows up and down) until it drained the battery.

Even though it's never been exposed to water, he says he's seen them where the humidity has made them corrode and do weird stuff like this (random horn, unexpected window movements, etc..).

Next time it does something weird I'll pony up for him to crack open the security module and see what state it's in. Hopefully it's another weird sign like this rather than the usual DOA module we usually hear about. Apparently if you replace the module before it is totally DOA PIWIS can actually transfer the data so you don't need new keys as well.

I get my car batteries at Costco and do an exchange every 18-24 months
Just bring it in and say it won't hold a charge.

Costco did lower the free replacement in the last year or so to I think now 36 months.
Last one I did they wanted to charge me the difference between what I originally paid and the new higher price.
I told them the battery clearly shows free replacement, so they need to do just that, replace the battery, not refund the original price and charge me the new price. Had to get a manager who agreed to just replace it.

Speaking of electrical gremlins, I've been trying to get the Jeep dealership to diagnose a rough idle issue w/ Mrs. S's Grand Cherokee. After spending a week with the car, they couldn't come up with anything (essentially, if it's not throwing codes, they're lost). The answer I got was that it needed to complete "some drive cycles" after they replaced the oil filter housing - which is a steaming load if I've ever heard one (we'd already put about a thousand miles on it since the filter housing replacement, including highway, local, and mountain driving)...

On the way home from picking it up so we could "put some more miles on it," I noticed that the auto start/stop function wasn't working. After conferring with the Mrs., we realized it hasn't been start/stopping for quite some time. One of the on-board diagnostic screens shows the auto stop/start status - and it's been stuck at "Start/Stop Disabled - battery charging" since I've been monitoring it for the past week. The battery tests 12V when the car is off, and it's showing 14V and change when the engine's running.

I think something's pooched with the voltage regulator or the computerized charging system causing it to constantly try to charge the battery - and I suspect the rough idle is related to that extra load.

Now all I have to do is try to convince the service writer to give a damn...

Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Heh. Drive cycles is the biggest crock of shit.

My first car that was actually mine was a Dodge Shadow and at 1000 miles it had some engine related issue (that I'm sure had absolutely nothing to do with out a 17yr old kid managed the break in period...).

Took it back to the dealer and the did something and gave me "drive it for 500 miles". Went through this multiple times where the bottom half of the engine was replaced in one trip and the top half in another. Finally my dad took it to the Plymouth dealer and the next day they called him with "we'd like to just go ahead and swap it for a new car under the Lemon Law". When he dug in and got details it turned out that the Plymouth dealer found that most of the gaskets were improperly installed and half the electrical connections weren't plugged in.

Did end up going from the 4 banger Shadow to a 6 cylinder Duster at no cost. I got soooo many tickets in that car...
