Now I have been offered a first-gen 2006 Cayenne Turbo S that appears to be in good shape, except the engine... which has either a burned valve or more likely terminal bore scoring. I can get a used engine in good shape and install that. Total outlay would be on the order of $10k. I know some of you guys have or used to have first-gen Cayennes.
What are these things like to drive?

I have recently been renting pickup trucks on my work trips, just because, and they all are quite sucky to drive. They all feel loose and floppy. Hit a pothole and the whole thing shudders and vibrates. I don't want to drive a vehicle like that. Even the Touareg Diesel that I used to borrow felt rather floppier than I would have thought. It did have extra large off road tires installed.

520 hp & 530 torque. Hmm, not bad. We've had two 2006 Cayenne S models, and still own one of them. My son, max$wag, still drives it. It started out with me, then the Bride of FRUNKenstein drove it for a while, then max$wag got it when he went off to college 4 years ago. It's been very reliable - only major issue was that we had to replace the starter a couple of months ago. Cayennes eat HVAC blower regulators and fans, but both are cheap & easy to replace. Same goes for hatch struts. I replaced them in both of our Cayennes, and the one we still have needs another set. PITA to replace, but not horrible nor horribly expensive. We replaced the stereo on the one we still have - the old one started acting wonky a couple of years ago. Spent about $850 total on a big ass touchscreen head unit and all of the wiring peripherals and installed it ourselves. Gives it backup camera, Bluetooth, etc.

As for driving manners, I assume a Turbo S will have additional suspension mods to make it better than a normal Cayenne. That being said, I never feel like ours were sloppy, like say a same era Explorer or Acadia. It isn't going to drive like your 911, but in comparison to other SUVs or pickup trucks of that era, it will be significantly better. Bottom line, if you can get all-in on a 2006 Turbo S for $10,000, then do it. You won't lose any money if you decide it isn't for you.

OBTW, we had to replace one of the headlight units due to a fender-bender about 4 years ago. You can find new aftermarket units that look identical to OEM for way cheaper - just keep that in mind if the need arises.

Took the Bride of FRUNKenstein out to dinner for our 29th anniversary at a swanky place on The Plaza here in KC. I dropped the car off at the valet, and he drove it off to the parking garage (after I asked if he could drive a manual). When we came back out at the end of the evening, he said they "upgraded it" and had it parked out front with an R8 and a Roller. He was tipped appropriately.

Smell any clutch burning on your way home? A valet that conciensous in KC is indeed a tip-worthy guy. [an a rarity] In Miami your turbo would have been in a container on a ship bound for South America before you had dessert.

CONGRATS on the anniversary, BTW. We just hit 48 years last month.

Frunk is gutsy! I would never hand my 996 keys to a valet. Much less a 996 Turbro!

I have a 958.1 diesel which has the same TDI as the Touareg, but it is tuned different and even the steel suspension without PDCC is much different than it's VW sibling. Mine turns 10 in few months and I dread something happening to it as I don't know what to replace it with.

If you can really get it with the "new" motor for $10k, you'd almost be silly not to. These vehicles can and are tracked/AutoX'd and it's not an embarrassing experience.

While it's getting it's new engine, make sure to do the cooling pipe (Y joint) upgrade and also inspect/replace the alternator and Xfer case if it looks like it experienced the Y failure in the past.

I know the 957 and early 958s had a head bolt issue, but I can't remember if the 956 had that issue.

Given the age, check the air suspension over good to see if it needs servicing.

Otherwise it should just be normal "old car" PPI type stuff.

The total cost outlay seems reasonable if…
How many miles on the chassis? And what options? A well-kept one is worth the effort to resurrect. I love mine and don’t plan to get rid of it (161,000 miles). With sport suspension mode on and PSM off they drive just like an E60 M5. Mine does have a mild tune. Gas mileage sucks, but totally fun to drive. Make sure the trans control module and Tippy work properly, as well, or it could be a money pit.

I posted the laguna blue 914 for sale on 914world.com and Rennlist (dammit) at about 11:00 am this morning. Sold it about half an hour ago. To a well-known race car driver in Georgia (but not B3). Kind of cool.
