I have family about 20 minutes away, so...looks like I'm crashing the guest room.

Some place is better than sleeping in the car.

Did you say this is the last year for the speedway? Are they going to turn it into condos and/or a mega mall?

No,NASCAR (those pussies that don't drive in the rain) in their infinite wisdom are converting the super speedway and roval into a short track

Yeah kinda. The youngest kid was possibly going to be transferred there pre-pandemic. I did some research and asked the California residents on here their impressions. Other than nearness to nice locations(forest/beaches/etc) there was not much positive to be found.

Short track...boring. NASCAR is full of idiots and I was a big fan at one time. At least they are not knocking it down and walking away.

I have an opportunity to buy a first-gen Cayenne V8 for a very good price, high miles ~150k, good condition.

But, it's scary. I want something that can be actually used in the winter as I have too many nice weather only cars. Seems these share bore scoring problems with the M96 especially in cold areas. This car has lived in Houston it's whole life and has no sign or scoring, probably because it's always hot there.
I would use the car as a daily driver here in Mass, even in the winter. I would also use it to tow the track 911 to some distant tracks that I don't want to drive the 911 to. My daily commute is only about 10 minutes each way which is another bad thing for bore scoring.
Some forum reading seems to indicate that some engines score up early on and some never do, no matter what. So with 150k and no bore scoring perhaps this is one of the good engines? Or the other side of the coin says that the ferrostan piston skirt coating is now all used up and it's ripe to score up. Seems like the #5 cylinder scores first and unlike the M96 it quickly progresses to a catastrophic failure, typically in less than 1000 miles the piston binds up and throws a rod through the block.

Even though the price is very attractive especially considering the car market, and I could probably get away with it, I just don't know. I'd rather have a diesel Touareg 2, this Cayenne is about 1/3 the price of a decent Touareg tdi.

The OG Cayenne is a solid vehicle even if it's interior is rather dated at this point and you can usually get them dirt cheap. I haven't looked in awhile, but you used to be able to get Turbos for only a couple K more than the S which made an S kinda silly.

The scoring is common in both the S and Turbo, so even if you start looking for the Turbo it's still an issue. There is also an issue with the cooling system on both that you need to make sure has been taken care of appropriately (a Y tube fractures and dumps all the coolant on your xfer case, most places don't properly clean it up and rebuild the xfer case which then later fails down the road as the coolant compromised the seals).

As far as the scoring, the same rules for driving a 996 in the cold apply (and really applies to any car). Don't let it idle to warm up, drive gently until it warms up, and use the proper oil for your weather.

Not knowing what the market looks like, I just did a quick search and found https://www.cars.com/vehicledetail/9d5f ... ebdfb00d2/ which is roughly in the same mileage category you are talking about. While that one is a bit more plain than mine (built a month earlier than this one), it's a good car. From the pics all I see is that you'd need to have the tow bar and a brake controller installed. Annoying that it's missing a bumper plug for a tow point on the rear and it has a bad clock (very common problem on the early diesels). It's the same TDI motor as the VW, but it has a Porsche tune as well as the more refined Porsche interior and exterior.

It's not too far from me, so if you are interested in it and get serious, I'd be happy to go take a look at it for you.
