If you haven't noticed - we're having a meet-up this year!

So we've also got that going for us.

Nah...just returned from 5 days with the 996 in Big Bend (west Texas) country. Many insects got slaughtered, a few roadrunners got scared 5hitl3ss (fun fact, they CAN fly if their life depends on it), and many gallons of gasoline were turned into speed and noise. In other words, a near perfect road trip.

I quit drinkin' last year...so...I've been busy doing all the shit I haven't been doing for too long.

Permanently closing my office space, chopping firewood, reprogramming Mrs. S's Jeep several times (at this point, there's a second OBD-II port in the passenger footwell so I can tinker on the go), talking my pop through his third mid-life crisis and third divorce at the tender age of 82, and taking care of Pee Pee Eye, who is now pushing 15. Which makes him at least three years overdue for his waltz across the rainbow bridge.

I also got back into ham radio - right now, I'm waiting for my 48" "tacticool" antenna for my Baofeng radio to show up.

The Russians launched a massive DDoS attack today (election day), so I've been watching that unfold as well while trying to keep my shit online.

Definitely not the Russians:

Sharing a video to distract attention from me. Also, I suspect that Cyndi Lauper sold a LOT of hand lotion in the 80's.

Actually since we're talking about you - you should check out cheap flights to KC 4/26-4/28 while I can still get you a nearby swanky hotel room for $70/night.

Spirit is running a deal right now actually if you ain't no snitch and won't whistle blow to the FAA they'll treat you like a human being for 30 minutes. (With a voucher.)

ANYWAY. What do you do with a HAM radio? Do you ever receive space signals?

I've tried to get the ISS a couple of times, but my handheld garbage isn't good enough. Looking for a desktop (or portable) 50W rig so I can dx (long-distance) - which will also let me at least listen to ISS when they're doing HAM shit.

We live on a hill ("Mount Nebo") in La Mesa, so we have pretty good line-of-sight coverage all the way to SD bay. I play with San Diego ARES (amateur radio emergency service) - so "when the grid goes down," there are still comms. I know this sounds like tin foil hat shit, but... when we had the great blackout of 2011 (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Southwest_blackout), it was pretty useful. And since I brought up the 2011 event - my bidness stayed online, even after San Diego International Airport went dark. :D

Still working on details for KC with Mrs. S.

Mostly what I get on the HAM these days is garbage from Jeep owners who use ham radios without a license, so they tend to shit all over frequencies they don't realize they shouldn't be using.

What is it with the Jeep guys and HAM radios? A guy I work with bought a Jeep and within 6 mos. he's studying to get his HAM radio license (dunno if he ever got it per your comment, lol.) I didn't realize the two things were connected. Is it because their fear of getting lost overcomes their fear of adventure?

I'll stop pestering you about the trip but wanted to expressly convey it would be great to have you there. :D
