Yesterday I was checking the oil level in my 996. I noticed there is only one gas strut holding my lid up, on the right side. Is this normal or am I missing a gas strut on the left side ?

That's correct. 2 in the front and 1 in the rear.

I believe some early cars had 2 in the rear, but 1 is normal.

Turbo's have 2 in the rear because of the immensely heavy and incredibly unreliable hydraulic spoiler mechanism.

So, in a nutshell, it does have only one strut. Or two. Glad we could clear that up for you.

I've got one on my 2000 Carrera C2. I asked this question somewhere too, because it looks like you could install a strut on both sides if you want to.

I am happy mine has two because if you've ever been clocked on the back of the noggin by an engine lid you don't forget. Cold weather seems to bring out the weakness in struts so two is better than one in my book.

I bought my car in Cali and drove it home to NJ. The morning we left Flagstaff (beautiful) I put the hood up in our hotel parking lot to check the oil and the lid came down on my head. I still remember it.
