The 996s on BaT are simply well documented, and enthusiast watchers call out spotted flaws and ask questions. Many if not most of the examples have also had the IMS job done, and have good service records. A few days ago I saw a silver C2 on its first day on the auction, bid at $25k. Some sellers who bought in at 12 to 15k, are taking advantage of the market to sell their 996s and move on to newer models. I think one sold today (or yesterday), a 2/98 build date, no fancy frills, just the basic stuff for $29k. Condition and service records are getting the best money.

I agree that the BaT model does provide some vetting on the cars offered for sale, therefore the buyers feel more comfortable with spending a bit more if the car passes the muster of the proletariat. In a way, it's like a PPI without anyone actually seeing the vehicle in person. Despite the comments that make you roll your eyes (has the IMSB been replaced in that 996tt?), there are a lot of comments by the auction observers about issues that I would have missed by myself. For example, anti-sway bars on a 914: most don't have 'em, some have aftermarket, and a few have them from the factory.

996.1 goes for $55,000 today on BaT! Has the curse be broken?

I watched it, great fun. Certainly not a normal price, but a good new high, especially when you consider the car. Yes, it was a stunning car with a rare color combination and an outstanding service history and only 27k miles. But it was also a straight ahead normal 996.1 I doubt this means that they are the next 964/993...none of the inflated values of so many cars make real world common sense. However this auction shows that the 996.1 is worthy of classic status, and that both mechanically and design wise, it is more than worthy of the name, Porsche. Some people will rush out the sell their cars. The smart ones will smile and enjoy them.

I think this is also a sign that people are getting priced out of 993 & 964's. Once they discover that 993's and 964's are beyond their means and that the 996 is (relatively) affordable and a far more usable car than the 993 or 964 they have to have one. They have the $$$ that was put aside for the 993 or 964 at 2017 prices, so spending that on a 996 doesn't raise their pulse.

This phenomenon is not limited to 996's either. I buy and sell VW Corrados. Two years ago you could have your selection of fairly nice driver grade Corrados for $3500. This spring those cars are going for $8000 to $12000. Parts cars have gone from $600 to $3000.

I am sure that many other semi-collectable cars are heading this way too.
