Radio makes a faint high pitched sound

Post by 32wildbilly » Sat May 08, 2021 12:06 pm

Ok 2005 996 C4S with original Porsche radio which is a CDR23. I went to get some takeout Thai today and on the way the radio was functioning perfect. When I got back in and started car I realized the radio wasn't on. Turned it up and all I could hear was a faint high pitched sound. Back home with radio shut off and retried once home, result nada. Into the house, mess around for maybe 10 minutes and I grabbed a couple of CD's to see if maybe the turner part of the radio died. Turned key on and radio worked perfectly!!?? Tried a CD worked perfect!!?? Any ideas?

Full disclosure on the way to pickup food the station played AC/DC "Thunderstruck" and I might have had the volume up a "significant" amount. Interpret previous sentence as tooth fillings rattling volume. Do these things have a "Hey STOOPID that's too freakin loud" amp shutoff/overload type thang in them?

Just wondering...

Update: Had another errand to run and this time on the way out they played Sympathy for the Devil by...well if you don't know by who you should. As usual that went to at least 35 on volume with no issues. I always wondered what was causing my hearing loss. No not really. Coming back radio behaved normally. I'm stumped. These issues were the worst to find when I was an electrician in a previous life. To find it the IT has to be in a failed condition.

Right now life is good.

You mentioned the radio, but does your system have the amplifier too? Could be the amplifier (in the radio or separate unit) is starting to go.

Or it could be the usual source of strange electrical gremlins.

Or mice.

Or it could just be pissed that you've been ignoring it for that racer boy toy...

If you mean the Bose system yes it is and if like the Z there is an amp for each speaker, but I'm not sure on this one. I'll do a little research.

Might be the battery as you refer to. It's at least 5 years old. Of course I don't stress a battery much especially when I realize the engine is about to do the unintended self dismantling routine.

Might be the electrical part of the ignition switch but I doubt it because the radio lite up and there were the proper words and numbers on the screen. Seemed like a lack of reception like the receiver had taken an unplanned break or brake if you prefer. Besides I read that later cars in the 996 chain had a different ignition switch "gun" with a different switch that doesn't fail very often but that might have been a dream.

"Mice...It's always the mice!" I sometimes wonder what happened to Gonzo.

You know I did feel the suggestion of a little resentment when I first got in today.

The old-school solution is to pull unswitched power directly from the battery so you don't get any AC interference (alternator whine)...or add an RF choke to the unswitched power line and audio source cable(s)...

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

I use those stupid FM/Bluetooth cigarette lighter adapters and the alternator whine is much louder in the 996 than my other old beaters.
