New engine under warranty value?

Hi guys,

I’m looking at a 2003 C2 where the engine was replaced under warranty. I haven’t seen the car yet, but would expect appropriate documentation from the dealer.

How does a new engine under warranty effect the VALUE of the car? Price wise and collectibility? The numbers no longer match because of a new engine, but it a warranty replacement.

Thanks,

Scrap

My uneducated opinion is it would not affect the value of the car one way or another. Do you know what year it was replaced? I have read/heard matching number cars are not so important in our cars as they might be in an American muscle car.

Depending on when it was replaced it may have the 997 IMSB which is not replaceable without opening the engine. The good news there, however, is that there were far less failures with that bearing. Otherwise functionally speaking it should be identical to the original.

I wouldn't think there should be any value impact one way or the other.

If you're buying a car as a potential investment, there's no denying that the original engine makes a collectible car more collectible. However, I don't think any of us will live long enough for this to be a significant factor for the "normal" 996 variants...

Of course, I wouldn't mind being horribly wrong.

Depending on how long the warranty lasts and if it transfers to the next owner, it would make your car a lot easier to sell if you decided to do so. A 996 with a warranty stands out from most other 996's at this point.

I had an 03 C2 with a 997 IMSB motor. Used that as a bargaining chip with insurance when it was totalled. So, it definitely increased the value of that car.

I doubt these will ever become "numbers matching" collectibles.

I also think it’s a wash.

That being said, Cuda did parlay that into about a 347% increase in the value of his car with the insurance company.
