Re: What did you do to/with your 996 today?
Took the 996tt to autocross on Saturday. This was our first PCA autocross in about 2 years because we lost our old location (Ameristar Casino). The new place is better for autocross as it is a police academy driving school. No drainage ditches to bottom out on and a much larger location. I had considered taking the red '73 914, but I just haven't spent any time checking it over. I don't know the last time the oil was changed. Plus it was hot, so the AC in the 996tt was a big factor.
I got better with each successive run. There was another X50 996tt there, and my times were better on every run. Although, by the 4th run, he was only .5 seconds slower. While I don't consider it a competition against others, it is nice to know that I've been faster than the other 996tts that have participated in this and previous autocrosses.
I still don't know how to pick my way through a course properly - when to be aggressive and when to be smoother, when to take a corner wide to carry speed through to the next turn, etc. I'd love to be able to get some private time on an autocross course, or at least share a session with maybe 3 or 4 other cars. At our club autocrosses, you do one run, then sit for 45 minutes or more until it is your turn again. At most, you get 4 runs, not counting the practice drive-through. I enjoy them, but would like to learn how to drive an autocross course properly. Anyhow, it was a great way to spend a few hours.

Re: What did you do to/with your 996 today?
Does your PCA not offer an AutoX class session? Both my local BMW and PCA chapters do (I liked the BMW class better as they did a class room component and it too was at a police training facility). 4 full runs is what I did in the afternoon of both those classes, but the morning was full of runs through small setups of each gate style (again the BMW group did better with this) and there were probably about 4 runs in each of those areas. You also have an instructor in the car with you in the morning to give you feedback.FRUNKenstein wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:24 pm I enjoy them, but would like to learn how to drive an autocross course properly. Also, about the time we bought the 996 I worked with a guy that had a 993 C4S with the whale tail the same color as the one you are parked next to in some of those pics. That was a damn fine looking car. Too bad his was totaled by a drunk driver relocating the engine to where the back seats once were...

70 in a 40. Only 40 because of construction. Cop said he gave me a break with "reckless driving," a straight-up speeding ticket would have been a lot more. I can't complain too much, but it was late and no one was on this four lane road. Such is life.Dr_Strangelove (whew!) wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 12:58 pmOops. How fast? Is that 1:38.2 per lap!!?? That must have been a huge track!
"Smoother"!? What does that mean? Maybe that's my problem...I'm cojones to the wall the whole run!! Perhaps I need to ride with somebody too.

In VA you ALWAYS take the plain speeding ticket if they'll give it.OceanBlue2000 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:39 pm70 in a 40. Only 40 because of construction. * Don't have to appear in court.
* Fewer points/smaller insurance hit.
* Because you don't have to go to court, there is no risk of jail time.
* Because you don't have to go to court, there is no risk of losing your license.
* Because you don't have to go to court, you don't have to listen to some smug judge that clearly hates his job and thinks everyone in his court deserves more than he can throw at you blather on how you are going to kill someone driving like that.
Yes at 30 over depending on the jurisdiction or the judge you get you could very easily end up spending a few days in jail (though that doesn't seem to be quite as common as it was back when I spent a lot of time ... interacting with local officers and courts...).

Not sure if he was bullshitting me or not, but he said the speeding ticket would have been more points than what I got. I find that hard to believe, but whatever. He did compliment my car though.gnat wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 2:22 pmIn VA you ALWAYS take the plain speeding ticket if they'll give it.OceanBlue2000 wrote: ↑Tue Aug 31, 2021 1:39 pm

Too bad.. hopefully your insurance costs don't go up too much. Uniden R3 was the best $300 I've spent on my car.

Re: What did you do to/with your 996 today?
That reminds me of the time I flipped my dirt kart in a race and tore the dog poo out of the back of my right hand. Every medical professional at the hospital when I answered the question "how did this happen" responded "Oh that sounds fun..." with the proper amount of snark added to their voice.
Was the trooper's compliment with that type of inflection?

Today, the driver-side window switch died in such a way that the window rolled all the down and the switch was permanently f*****g knackered.
Unsurprisingly, I was rolling the window down to clear accumulated rain/fog from the glass before merging onto the freeway. Perfect.
After an...um...invigorating drive to work, I sat in the parking lot for a few minutes - no tools, of course - deciding whether to bodge or not to bodge.
I bodged.
DIY steps:
1) Jam the dead switch down into the console. Eff it, it's already broken.
2) Stuff a meaty digit into that gaping switch hole and rip - er, carefully separate - the switch plate from the center console
3) Use the one good switch to operate both windows as needed. Make BA Baracus proud.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.
Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.
