The roof of my track Corrado is about the height of a new RAV4's front seat cushion. Seems like people now associate "fun to drive" with "sitting up high on a barstool".

What a minute - the finish line at your autocross has you stop immediately?! Ours is at the end of a straight, so that you're hauling ass as you pass the finish line and everybody nearly wipes out trying to stop in the 100 feet after the finish line and the 90 degree turn to exit the course. Way more excitement . . .

I've been reading about autocross design as I may design a few this year(God help those low horsepower English cars!). One thing many pointed out including the noted SCCA course designer is "Start your course design with the finish first and build around that assuring there is plenty of room to stop safely after the lights." Another comment from him is "Everybody wants to floor it at the end in hopes of making up for all the mistakes previously made during the run. Therefore make sure to have room from the last obstacle so the car is unloaded(not crossed up) to allow a straight shot to the finish so everybody can floor it...because they will."

To be fair, that was a class rather than an actual event. That video pans over the whole course, but it was broken into 3 sections for the morning and then merged for the whole course in the afternoon. So that forced some layout considerations I'm sure.
The video starts in the middle section which is where the start was on the other side of the lot from where the camera was about where I make the turn into the third section. The second section was down the hill behind me and had a couple of skid pads we had to do in a figure 8.
The start wasn't much better with the gate almost directly facing the camera position and you immediately had to make a hard right into a slalom where we could select the direction we wanted. Only the SmartCar that was there could cut tight enough to skip the first cone though, everyone else couldn't turn fast enough and had to go around the first cone of the slalom before you could really start accelerating.
Because the course was so packed to give us experience with all the different gates and rules, it actually favored the SmartCar (insanely tight turn radius) and my P!g (really low peak torque) over the more powerful 911s and Turbos.
