CONTEST - Who has the most projects sitting on your workbench?

Post by FRUNKenstein » Wed Feb 09, 2022 2:17 pm

Alright folks, there has been discussion about those of us who buy parts and let them sit on our workbenches for far too long before finally installing them. In other words:

"Buyin' parts is easy. Doin' work is hard."

So, let's see some workbench pics and hear some stories. I'll go first. Here's my workbench as it sat yesterday. No staging, no puffing, I was just walking by and became thoroughly disgusted at how freaking bad I am about buying parts and then not doing the repairs.

Among the projects:

A new LED 3rd brake light to go with my new LED taillights. I installed the taillights in October 2015. The 3rd brakelight is still in its little, long skinny box behind the big boxes on the left.

A used glovebox for the '73 914 that I bought last June.

Rear pads & rotors for the 928. The brake pad wear light was on when I bought the car back in September of 2014. So, you know, no hurry.

I'm not even sure what's in the other boxes.

I do see two items that just need to go in the shitcan - the OEM head unit for max$wag's '06 Cayenne S that we replaced over Christmas (I guess we didn't throw it away because we thought the next owner might want a 16 year old stereo that doesn't work); and a Pep Boys aftermarket air filter for the X1/9 (I went back to the OEM setup with factory parts). I'm sure that air filter set the prior owner back at least $10 bucks, so yeah, better not throw that POS away.

So, let's see what you guys got . . .

I'm out. You win. My workbench is covered with tools I haven't put back after doing stuff, but only one project and not a car project.

Aww, where's the fun in that. It's the internet, so it's perfectly acceptable to embellish.

Did you ever build model cars? That's my current project. In 1:1 scale though.

Yes I got it in boxes and crates. Just like one of those plastic models. I think I have all the parts. Don't you hate it when your model's missing something and you've got to write them for a replacement? There are a lot more parts in more boxes in other places too.
It's been hanging out here since September.

Currently piled on my workbench:

1) Half crate of old hard drive enclosures to melt down into aluminum ingots. I already melted the other half.
2) My old, half-disassembled stick welder from which I'm harvesting the copper to melt as well.
3) 4-foot sections of both 1.5" and 2" square tube, and a pile of 1/8" mild steel plate. I started selling my "artisan" bear-shaped trailer hitch inserts back in December...but I haven't bothered to make any more since I sold the last batch because lazy.
4) The 996 parts-to-be-installed pile, which (still) includes an ignition switch, driver-side window regulator, a resistor pack for my LED 3rd tail light, and a bunch of other shit I can't even remember right now.
5) The antenna rebuild kit for the power antenna on the Corvette.
6) 2-part epoxy and dark brown epoxy die so I can finish repairing the hole I punched in my desk (because anger management issues).
7) My forge/furnace, which needs to be relined with new insulating wool so I don't melt the damn thing when doing (1) and (2).
8) An enormous pile of tools I have used in the past 3 months and not put away properly.
9) A roll of 3-stage filter medium for my koi pond poo filter.
10) Underwater plaster repair compound...which really needs to go on the bottom of my pool, but it's like 60 degrees in there currently. Eff that.
11) 4 or 5 half-built Arduino/RPII projects that kinda work but haven't actually been finished
12) Half-built electric-start conversion for my $50 second-hand Harbor Freight Predator generator
13) New carburetor kit, still in box, for my Ryobi gas chainsaw-on-a-stick
14) Escort hard-wire kit for the radar detector that's been in my wife's Jeeps - with the cigarette lighter adapter - for 5+ years
15) Awesome LED-illuminated skull-shaped power switch to replace the old Radio Shack switch for the line locks in the Corvette
16) A half-used sack of green sand (for sand casting) - most of which I improperly used to soak up leaks from the Corvette and 996.

This is just the stuff that's close to the top of the heap. When I get around to putting the tools away, I'll find the rest of the stuff I've already forgotten about.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

I approve of the vise-grips-in-lieu-of-a-steering-wheel mod.

I think I'll leave it that way when I finish it. OEM steering wheels are crazy unobtanium these days. Did everyone who put on a Momo wheel toss the factory wheel in the trash?

I sold my 996 ugly-ass 4-spoke wheel the day I received my used 3-spoke… would do the same if I installed a quick-release wheel. Gotta feed the habit.

I think I bought the world’s worst headers (RL seller’s description, not mine) with the $$ from the 4-spoke. Assuming I pass smog in September, those shitty headers are going back on for 2 years. #f**kTheMan

My phone doesn't have enough RAM to show all my unfinished projects. A bit ADD I guess.
