UPDATE
Started having the P305 code again
I scanned with my durametric and now see P1371 Valve lift control check sum and P1364 valve lift control Cyl 5
any ideas on fixing?
If I drive it am I in danger of an engine failure?

You may have a bad lifter on that cylinder, they get stuck at high lift which causes misfires.

Sticking lifter seems to be a possibility, as theprf suggested above. Were I in your situation I'd drive the car to a shop you trust (sooner rather than later) who has a PIWIS where they can do some detailed diagnoses. If a lifter is indeed sticking it can be replaced with the engine still in the car or there's the shadetree mechanic routine described in the Rennlist (damnit) thread that's referenced from the one I've linked above.

My Targa ended up needing 2 intake lifters replaced. Could have been a lot worse
I found a really good shop that pretty much only does Porsche repair. Its been around over 30 years. They have 2 of their techs that really know M-96 engines. Even the office manager knows Porsche. Unlike many shops, they have real Porsche diagnostic tools, several versions of PIWIS. When I spoke with them and explained the codes and symptoms I was getting, they knew exactly what the likely problem was and they were spot on. I guess it helps when you really know the car
All in all it was just under $2k including an oil change and programming a new key for me. I think I got off easy.
I can't really complain, in the 8 years I have had the Targa, other than tires, oil and brakes, I have not had to really put any $$$ into the car. A few niggles here and there, maybe total $200 and a pair of window regulators that I installed.
Now I can start driver her again

Yeah that isn't bad at all. Glad you got it straightened out.
My misfire turned out to be much more expensive...
