Nothing glamorous: filters. Air filter, cabin...routine stuff. I took a look at the air filter on the 996 and I don't think the shop put in a new one when they had the whole DAMN MOTOR out for the IMS / Main / chain guide / water pump / AOS / Etc work. It wasn't bad, just.....dusty. I should have done it with the last oil change, but I was lucky enough to get THAT done DIY, much less anything else at the time.

We get a 10% discount for the dubious Outpost affiliation, but with smaller orders the shipping is a hefty %. Still better than thowing money at our local dealership. [You walk into that gold-plated, brand new building and approach the parts counter feeling like Oliver Twist about to ask for more gruel....at 300% markup. :) ]

I pinged Jason today - need to order up a water pump.

Understeer: You will hit the wall with the front end.
Oversteer: You will hit the wall with the rear end.
Horsepower: How hard you will hit the wall.
Torque: How far you will move the wall.

Gone hunting with Alec Baldwin and Dick Cheney. Back soon.

So that turned out to be your noise? Just curious how old is the pump?

The stethoscope suggested it was. The noise goes away when the belt is off, and there is some play in the water pump impeller shaft, so it seems the most likely suspect.

Pump is probably 4-5 years old, maybe 50k miles.

I always wonder about the "change it every x years" deal. Sounds like you got the life out of yours.

The issue is that there is little indication that it has failed until you've already cooked you motor. As I understand it, due to where the temp sensor is you don't see the engine over heating if the the water is not moving. Additionally, there have been documented cases of the impeller spreading and clogging up the coolant channels.

Thus the wisdom is that you just change it proactively to save yourself a much more expensive repair.
